1693ST19567-153La Haye: Abraham de Hondt & Jacob van Ellinkhuysen 1693. Translated by Guilleragues. 140 x 75 mm. 5 1/2 x 3". 346 pp.
Attractive contemporary speckled calf raised bands spine gilt in compartments with central gilt tool surrounded by gilt rules and tendrils gilt lettering all edges speckled red expert repairs to spine ends and perhaps to corners. Joints and corners a little worn but the binding otherwise in excellent condition; just a hint of browning along a couple edges but A REMARKABLY BRIGHT FRESH AND CLEAN COPY INTERNALLY.

This is a collection of passionate love letters purportedly written by a Portuguese nun Mariana Alcoforado to her French lover Noël Bouton de Chamilly. First published in 1669 the letters express profound longing heartbreak and emotional intensity. Although the work originally included just five letters the racy content raised quite a sensation and the book proved so popular that it went through several expanded editions that included newly "discovered" missives. The present edition includes a total of 12 epistles by our nun and 11 responses from her lover as well as another series of "tender and passionate" love letters between a couple referred to only as "la présidente F. à M. Le baron de B." Though the original work is now widely believed to be a piece of fiction written by the supposed translator French diplomat Gabriel Joseph de Lavergne viscomte de Guilleragues 1628-84 it is still considered to be a very important epistolary novel providing insight into the emotional landscape of the time and influencing numerous adaptations and imitations in literature. Some importance of the work can be seen in the fact that copies of the first edition consistently bring substantial prices at auction more than $25000 three times since 2010. The early ownership inscription on the pastedown belongs to Martin Bowes 1670-1726 a barrister and fellow of the Royal Society. Abraham de Hondt & Jacob van Ellinkhuysen unknown

Original 1969 Led Zeppelin songbook for what many consider to be their finest album. 48 pages including 19 pages of photos of the boys in band, six of which are in color. One-page color headshot photo of each band member. Colour photos of the band inside each cover, our favorite being the one inside the front cover which shows the shaggy boys staring down at the camera, with Jimmy Page resplendent in yellow clothes trimmed in blue and the band's yellow phallic logo added above them. Includes piano sheet music, lyrics and chords for these classic rock anthems: Whole Lotta Love; What Is And What Should Never Be; The Lemon Song; Thank-You; Moby Dick; Heartbreaker; Living Loving Maid; Ramble On; Bring It On Home. Includes brief write-ups about the band and each of its members. Store stamp atop title page otherwise contents clean and unmarked. Binding intact. Above-average external wear and soiling as perhaps befits this pre-eminent heavy metal band which definitely got down and dirty on this album. An awesome Led Zep collectible. Book

2766THE FIRST WORK OF FICTION WRITTEN IN SWEDISH TO HAVE AN AUSTRALIAN SETTING. Stockholm : Gadelius 1817. First edition. Duodecimo modern half green morocco over marbled boards spine with raised bands and gilt lettering sunned modern marbled endpapers original printed upper wrapper bound in but lacking the lower wrapper 98 pp; a crisp clean copy in handsome modern binding. Ferguson 691a. The ideas and social attitudes expressed in the works of Swedish romantic poet and novelist C.J.L. Almqvist were highly unconventional for their period being considered tantamount to revolutionary in many quarters of Swedish society - this in spite of the fact that Almqvist was ordained as a Lutheran pastor at quite a young age. Parjumouf is one of his first published works written at a time in his life when his main influence was the philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau. In this novella a story within a story Almqvist relates the strange romantic tale of Parjumouf a woman who lives in the earthly paradise that is to be found on the western slopes of the recently-crossed Blue Mountains of New South Wales. Almqvist's storyteller who recounts the adventure to a gathering in a Bordeaux wine merchant's refers to Australia as both New Holland and Ulimaroa a term Almqvist had borrowed from the Swedish geographer Daniel Djurberg and which originally derives from the account of Cook's first voyage. There is no published English translation of Parjumouf. Scarce. Two copies of this first edition are recorded in Australian collections National Library of Australia; State Library of New South Wales. hardcover
