OCLC locates only 12 copies in book form. Quarto sized 10" x 12" in blindstamped red cloth hardcovers stamped in gilt over black tape cloth spine. Unpaginated 46 pp. A uniquely designed geography/freading aid for young people that instead of maps features a full page of small hieroglyphic engravings for each descriptive word or group of words that illustrated notable facts places names etc. for each of the states covered. For example for Maine one small item is "The minerals are" with a small engraving of a handiron "granite" small picture of a rock; "More engraving of a ship are built here than in any other State". Each hieroglyphic page is followed by a single page of text of desciptive text which which is an non-illustated transcription of the the illustrated page. Covers well soiled though the gilt titling is still bright. Some tape stains to the dark brown endpapers front hinge split but all pages firmly attached; dampstaing to the lower aprox. quarter of all pages. Two friends a world apart with a mutual interest in and appreciation for the poetry of Edward Thomas have left us the great gift of this utterly charming work.<br/><br/>Philip Edward Thomas 1878-1917 was already an accomplished novelist and essayist when he turned to poetry. In 1915 at the age of 37 he enlisted in the British Army to fight in "The Great War" and was tragically killed in battle two years later during the Battle of Arras. <br/><br/>His youngest daughter Myfanwy receiving a letter in 1984 from a Mr. Masatsugu Ohtake who was an admirer of Thomas's work responded and the two began a correspondence that would last for almost 20 years as her last letter is dated November 28 2003. <br/><br/>Published privately by the Whittington Press who is renowned for their superb printing and binding; this one of fifteen deluxe copies bound in full Nigerian goatskin by The Fine Book Bindery with endpapers marbled by Christopher Rowlatt printed on Kozo hand-made paper for Masatsugu Ohtake by Patrick Randle with engravings by Hellmuth Weissenborn with errata slip loosely laid in at p. 26 with a signature and chop at the colophon which one presumes is that of Masatsugu Ohtake. <br/><br/>The twenty wood-engravings by Hellmuth Weissenborn 1898-1982 perfectly complement Myfanwy's description of the lovely English countryside around her which she frequently described to Ohtake; presented in the book in yellow and green and as monochrome in the extra suite of 20 loose plates.<br/><br/>___DESCRIPTION: Bound in full gold Nigerian goatskin with gilt lettering on the spine fore- and bottom edges uncut endpapers hand-marbled the twenty in-text wood-engravings throughout errata slip of delicate yellow hand-made paper loosely laid in at p. 26; hand-set Caslon printed on Kozo hand-made paper at Whittington Press for Masatsugu Ohtake small quarto size 10 1/8" by 6 1/4" pagination: i-x 1-34 colophon 35 blank 36 acknowledgement of editor 37; this one of the 15 deluxe copies total edition of 50 with an additional 50 copies also bound in full goatskin for the Whittington Press the chop and signature in Japanese on the colophon page. The extra suite of prints and their wallet also fine; clean and utterly without wear. The slipcase near fine strong and sturdy clean with a few small sections of the brown paper lightly abraded. Bookplate of noted collector Norman Sondheim on the verso of the front wrappers. <br /> <br /> Comprises title page/announcement; two engravings one of the Hell-Box Press and the second the Hammer Creek Press; and a colophon. The Hell-Box Press was one of Fass's earlier printing endeavors. Hammer Creek Press began when in 1950 when Fass purchased from Valenti Angelo a small iron press previously owned by Bruce Rogers who had sold it to Angelo the year before. It was on this press of significant provenance that the bulk of the Hammer Creek Press editions were printed few of which have stated limitations. With only 4 institutions reporting ownership according to OCLC it is difficult to imagine this title was produced in an edition of more than a few dozen copies if that. Fine English In modern black frame. Size; (26 x 57 cm). Limited edition. Original graphic poster of Altintas in memoriam François Truffaut for 13. International Istanbul Film Festival, 2-12 April, 1994. He was born in 1935 in Istanbul. He graduated from the Poster Atelier of the Istanbul Academy of Fine Arts in 1957. His first solo exhibition was held in 1964 in Istanbul and it was recognized as the first Turkish graphic design exhibition. In 1968 he pioneered the establishment of the Association of Graphic Artists. In 1976 he became a lecturer at the Academy of Fine Arts, School of Applied Industrial Arts, and he was appointed as the director of the school in 1979. He was the chairman of the Professional Association of Graphic Designers in 1982 and from 1987 to 1993. He held exhibitions in Turkey and abroad, and participated in many collective exhibitions. He showed his artworks in international biennials and triennials in different countries. By virtue of 60. birthday, he invited selected graphic designers worldwide and held an international poster exhibition in 1995 in Istanbul. Eventually he initiated the establishment of the international poster archive in Mimar Sinan University, Department of Graphic Design, with the posters sent to the exhibition. He became a professor in 1995, was appointed as the chair of the Department of Graphic Design in 1996, and as a member of the board of directors of Mimar Sinan University in 2001. Altintas has retired from the same university in 2002. A number of his works were accepted by museums and archives in countries such as Switzerland, Poland, France, and the USA. He received various national awards. In 2004, he was awarded Icograda Achievement Award by ICOGRADA (International Council of Graphic Design Associations) due to his contributions in Turkish graphic arts. In 2009, he was selected as a member to AGI (Alliance Graphique Internationale). In 2011 he received the 'Artist of Honor Award' of the TÜYAP 21st Istanbul International Art Fair. In 2012 he was awarded the Gloria Artis Medal, a decoration in Arts awarded by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage of the Republic of Poland, and in 2014 "Knight's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland". He has been working as a Professor at Feyziye Schools Foundation, Isik University, Faculty of Fine Arts, Visual Communication Design Department since 2012.
