pp. (14), 384 + Frontis portrait and four unusual engraved plates. Small 8vo. 170 mm. Handsome early full leather binding; elaborately tooled in blind with floral corners to decorated frames. Original figural metal clasps on leather straps. The binding is somewhat worn, but still very attractive. Schmolck (Schmolkens) was a Silesian Lutheran pastor who wrote over 1180 hymns, some of which are still being sung. Their biblical and sentimental character made them very popular. The author published it under the name of Pietro Soave Polano an anagram of Paolo Sarpi Veneto plus o. <br /> <br /> The book's emphasis was on the role of the Papal Curia and its slant on the Curia hostile. Sarpi's work attained such fame that the Vatican opened its archives to Cardinal Pietro Sforza Pallavicino whom it commissioned to write a three volume rebuttal entitled the "Istoria del Concilio di Trento scritta dal P. Sforza Pallavicino della Comp. di Giesù ove insieme rifiutasi con auterevoli testimonianze un Istoria falsa divolgata nello stesso argomento sotto nome di Petro Soave Polano" "The History of the Council of Trent written by P. Vignettes and headpieces by Pierre Philippe Choffard (1731-1809). The plates are dated mainly 1767-1769. 8vo. 210 mm. Plates slightly foxed. Text very clean. Marbled edges and endpapers. Original French full leather binding with marbled decoration. Spine tooled in gold gilt. Binding somewhat worn at extremities, but still attractive. Saint-Lambert (1716-1803) began writing poetry in his adolescence and belonged to the circle around Francoise de Graffigny in Luneville.
