An early publication by the Nawakum Press run by the inimitable David Pascoe whose name has become synonomous throughout the world of fine press publishing with meticulous craftsmanship and design often paired with original art work by contemporary artists. As is stated on their web site "While incorporating the very best from the fine press tradition the Press also chooses to stretch the boundaries of the modern day book." <br /> <br /> This work presents fifteen poems by Robert Elwood Bly 1926-2021 renowned poet and activist who won the National Book Award for Poetry in 1968 for his book "The Light Around the Body". Per the prospectus "It has been said that Bly has taken on many roles among them groundbreaking poet and remains one of the most hotly debated artists of the past half century The psychologist Robert Moore has said that 'when the cultural and intellectual history of our time is written Robert Bly will be recognized as the catalyst for a sweeping cultural revolution.' "<br /> <br /> Presented with two original wood engravings by Berkeley artist Keith Cranmer who began engraving by hand in 1975. One of 160 copies octavo size 55 pp. The thirteenth publication from The Allen Press this story by Honore de Balzac 1799-1850 was originally titled "Maitre Cornelius" and first appeared in 1831 in the "Revue de Paris"; it was published in book form in 1832. Balzac was a prolific French novelist and playwright perhaps best remembered today for "Eugénie Grandet" his first bestseller; in this famous wayward love story set in fifteenth-century France Marie de Saint-Vallier daughter of Louis XI is unhappily married and becomes entangled in an unusual love affair. <br/><br/>The book features four wood engravings by the incomparable Mallette Dean 1907-1975 painter and illustrator who worked for most of his career in San Francisco on projects such as the WPA Mural Project the murals in Coit Tower and for fifteen years illustrated books for the Grabhorn Press and other Bay-Area presses such as the Allens'. Bookplate of noted collector Norman Sondheim on the verso of the front wrappers. <br /> <br /> Comprises title page/announcement; two engravings one of the Hell-Box Press and the second the Hammer Creek Press; and a colophon. The Hell-Box Press was one of Fass's earlier printing endeavors. Hammer Creek Press began when in 1950 when Fass purchased from Valenti Angelo a small iron press previously owned by Bruce Rogers who had sold it to Angelo the year before. It was on this press of significant provenance that the bulk of the Hammer Creek Press editions were printed few of which have stated limitations. With only 4 institutions reporting ownership according to OCLC it is difficult to imagine this title was produced in an edition of more than a few dozen copies if that.
