Ballad collections had appeared before but Percy's Reliques seemed to capture the public imagination like no other. Not only would it inspire poets such as Samuel Taylor Coleridge and William Wordsworth to compose their own literary ballads in imitation it also made the collecting and study of oral poetry a popular pastime. This set featuring beautiful woodcut engravings of Richard Westall's illustrations Westall was Queen Victoria's own drawing master includes Vol I and Vol II of PARADISE LOST and a third volume featuring PARADISE REGAINED and SAMSON AGONISTES - printed in 1816 1821 and 1822 respectively - contemporarily bound as a set in 1823 as indicated on the spine of one book. Three volumes 6.5'' x 4'' each. Contemporary maroon straight-grain morocco blind stamped boarders gilt ruling and ornamentation to front board and spine raised bands elaborately gilt-stamped spines. Gilt stamped turn-ins all edges gilt. Russet brown coated endpapers. Illustrated with engraved titles pages and section titles. Bookplates to front pastedowns. Maitland Coffin Redcliffe Square Earl's Court on watermarked paper in very rich deep ink with many personalizations and playfulness in font and pen use Letter and enveloped decorated with doodles and signed. a passage reads: 'By the way you asked me to tell you how many of the Royal Family I had as Pupils The fact was that with the exception of Prince Arthur Duke of Conwaught::::::::::Prince Leapold Duke of Albany and Princess Beatrice I taught them all. They all possessed natural talent for Original design. I hate copies!. Who would value a copy of a play or a poem by Shakespear written by the linen draper's apprentice I detest mere copies!
