Original watercolour illustration depicting "Friday bathing the ankles of the Spaniard whom he had rescued from the Savages" from Volume II p. 48 of Cooke's 1793 edition of 'Robinson Crusoe'. The central watercolour oval mounted to another sheet of paper with monochrome wash decorative borders. Titled in ink to the foot of the decorative border "Robinson Crusoe". Signed in pencil to the foot "Corbould". 13cm x 8cm. Framed and glazed in a modern decorative giltwood frame measuring 30.5 x 24cm including the frame. There is a small nick to the blank upper margin otherwise condition is very good indeed the watercolour remaining clean and the colours fresh. An original illustration by the artist and illustrator Richard Corbould 1757-1831 for Cooke's 1793 edition of Defoe's 'Robinson Crusoe'. </p><p>Born into the well-known Corbould family of artists and illustrators Richard Corbould exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy of Arts 1777-1811 and the British Institution 1806-17. From the early 1780s he was employed mainly as a book illustrator one his most notable works being the illustrations he provided to the publisher Charles Cooke's series of 'pocket editions' of English classics issued between 1793 and 1802. This set featuring beautiful woodcut engravings of Richard Westall's illustrations Westall was Queen Victoria's own drawing master includes Vol I and Vol II of PARADISE LOST and a third volume featuring PARADISE REGAINED and SAMSON AGONISTES - printed in 1816 1821 and 1822 respectively - contemporarily bound as a set in 1823 as indicated on the spine of one book. Three volumes 6.5'' x 4'' each. Contemporary maroon straight-grain morocco blind stamped boarders gilt ruling and ornamentation to front board and spine raised bands elaborately gilt-stamped spines. Gilt stamped turn-ins all edges gilt. Russet brown coated endpapers. Illustrated with engraved titles pages and section titles. Bookplates to front pastedowns. From a series of engravings depicting the Classical sculptures in the British Museum.<br /> Corbould was a student of the Royal Academy under Fuseli where he gained the silver medal for a study from the life. While at the Academy he made the friendship of Flaxman Stothard West Chantrey and Westmacott. He is best known for his drawings of ancient marbles in the possession of various English noblemen like the Duke of Bedford's collection at Wobourn Abbey and the Earl of Egremont's Collection at Petworth. He spent about 30 years drawing those in the collection of the British Museum and these were engraved and published after his death. unknown
