First published in three volumes between 1774-1781 this work is generally regarded as being the first narrative English literary history.Written by Thomas Warton 1728-1790 an English literary historian also remembered for being Poet Laureate appointed in 1792. This was his most important and best-known work and in its first edition only covered until the sixteenth century.Complete in six volumes. With an illustrated frontispiece of the author.Containing the bookplate of John Cann Bailey 1864-1931 a literary critic and chairman of the National Trust. His works include 'The Claims of French Poetry' 'Poets and Poetry' and 'An Anthology of English Elegies'.With charming gilt detail to the spines and an armorial stamp to the covers. In a full calf binding. Externally a trifle rubbed to the spines in particular to the tail of volumes I and III; volume I is cracked along the front joint. Ownership bookplate to the front pastedown of each volume. Internally generally firmly bound; the front hinges of volume I II is cracked but remaining firm.
