Medico di origine veneta morto nel 1460, esercitò a Padova anche come insegnante presso la locale e prestigiosa Università di medicina, dove dai documenti risulta professore dal 1422 al 1441. La sua opera Consilia, stampata nei primi decenni del secolo successivo, è molto conosciuta e apprezzata. Viene anche ricordato per l’attività di chirurgo ed esperto di anatomia: si dice che abbia eseguito personalmente quattordici dissezioni complete. Trattandosi di uno studioso quattrocentesco, i suoi interessi botanici sono strettamente legati alla sua attività di medico nella preparazione dei medicamenti che provenivano per la maggior parte dal mondo vegetale. Il prestigio dei Consilia durerà per alcuni secoli e molti saranno gli autori di medicina che attingeranno alle sue informazioni scientifiche e alla struttura del libro, organizzato sapientemente nella discussione di 305 casi clinici comprendenti tutta la materia medica conosciuta, chirurgia e anatomia comprese. Doctor of Venetian origin who died in 1460, he also practiced in Padua as a teacher at the local and prestigious University of Medicine, where the documents prove him as professor from 1422 to 1441. His work Consilia, printed in the first decades of the following century, is well known and appreciated. He is also remembered for his activity as a surgeon and anatomy expert: he is said to have personally performed fourteen complete dissections. Being a fifteenth-century scholar, his botanical interests are closely linked to his activity as a doctor in the preparation of medicines that mostly came from the plant world. The prestige of the Consilia will last for a few centuries and many medical authors will draw on its scientific information and on the structure of the book, expertly organized in the discussion of 305 clinical cases including all known materia medica, surgery and anatomy included.

La pepsine, découverte autour des années 1830, est une enzyme animale facilitant la décomposition des protéines, donc la digestion. Opera sulle proprietà medicinali delle piante, divisa in tre libri, che si inserisce nel filone dei testi di botanica farmaceutica, in cui le piante, come i fiori e i frutti, vengono esaminati dal punto di vista della nomenclatura, della nascita della specie e delle proprietà medico-farmacologiche. Maranta individua qui nel cytisus la "medicago arborea" nota agli antichi per le sue proprietà di erba medica. Bartolomeo Maranta, medico e botanico nato a Venosa verso il 1500 e morto a Molfetta nel 1571. Allievo di Luca Ghini, fu un naturalista stimato formatosi presso il Giardino dei Semplici a Pisa, lavorò presso il Giardino botanico di Napoli dal 1554 al 1556, esperienza che mise a frutto dal 1568 a Roma progettando un nuovo giardino. Fu medico del Duca di Mantova e del cardinale Branda Castiglione. 2) Prospero Alpini, De plantis aegypti, accessit etiam Liber de Balsamo, Venezia, de Franceschi, 1592. Prima edizione del De plantis e seconda del De balsamo; cc. (4), 80, (8), con 50 belle incisioni su legno nel testo, molte a piena pagina, e marca tipografica sui due frontespizi: il Dialogus de balsamo ha un suo frontespizio, la paginazione è continua. Edizione originale della prima opera sulle piante dell’Egitto e sull’opera considerata la più importante di Prospero Alpini; l’autore fu tra i primi botanici e medici del XVI secolo a studiare le piante per il loro specifico interesse botanico e non soltanto per gli utilizzi che se ne potevano fare in medicina; inoltre, il metodo autoptico adottato, sia sulle piante selvatiche che su quelle da lui coltivate, permise di fare in campo botanico grandi passi avanti. Sono qui rappresentate per la prima volta in un trattato di botanica europeo la pianta del caffè (?), del baobab (pianta e frutto) e della banana, i cui frutti vengono descritti come assai nutrienti, profumati ma un po’ pesanti per lo stomaco. Delle foglie e dei frutti si descrive la morfologia, l’utilizzo in cucina nel caso delle piante edibili, le proprietà benefiche e loro utilizzi nella preparazione di decotti. L’opera, di certo un trattato pioneristico, fu utilizzata come base sistemica per I successivi studi sulla flora egiziana. Le 49 xilografie, quasi tutte a piena pagina che illustrano piante, alberi e frutti, sono molto chiare e precise scientificamente. Il De balsamo è un approfondito trattato, anche questo in forma di dialogo, sulla materia con note storiche e scientifiche, con una illustrazione sulla pianta del balsamo, e la descrizione dei luoghi dove questa nasce, principalmente l’Egitto e l’Arabia, e i modi in cui viene utilizzata. Prospero Alpini (1553-1617), medico e botanico, ebbe l’occasione di viaggiare in Egitto quando divenne medico personale del console veneziano al Cairo, Giorgio Emo. Qualche leggero ed ininfluente alone alle ultime due carte ma nel complesso esemplare in buone-ottime condizioni di conservazione. Prima non comune edizione di questo importante trattato di farmacia, nello stesso anno uscirono altre due edizioni. L'opera raccoglie numerosissime ricette per la preparazione di innumerevoli preparati farmaceutici. Francois Megandie fu uno dei medici più celebri del suo tempo anche se i suoi esperimenti furono ampiamente criticati già all'epoca per l'ampia ed incontrollata pratica della vivisezione che era solito praticare in modo spesso cruento. Nato a Bordeaux il 6 ottobre 1783 (morì a Sannois, 7 ottobre 1855) è considerato un pioniere della fisiologia sperimentale. È conosciuto per aver descritto il foro di Magendie. Esiste anche un segno di Magendie, una rotazione verso il basso e verso l'interno dell'occhio dovuta ad una lesione del cervelletto. Il suo più importante contributo alla scienza fu anche il più contestato. Contemporaneo di Charles Bell, Magendie condusse numerosi esperimenti sul sistema nervoso, in particolare verificando la distinzione fra nervi di sensazione e nervi motori nel midollo spinale, giungendo alla cosiddetta legge di Bell-Magendie. Questo portò ad un'intensa rivalità fra le due sponde della Manica, dove gli inglesi sostenevano che Bell avesse pubblicato le sue scoperte per primo e che Magendie aveva rubato i suoi esperimenti. L'asprezza di questa rivalità scientifica tuttavia può essere paragonata solamente a quella tra Isaac Newton e Robert Hooke. Bell aveva dimostrato le proprietà essenziali dei nervi anteriori, ma non aveva trovato risoluzione al problema dei nervi posteriori e della conduzione della sensibilità. Sostanzialmente egli si preoccupava non tanto di studiare le reali proprietà dei nervi, quanto piuttosto di dimostrare che i due tipi di nervi avessero diverse funzioni. Al contrario, Magendie considerava diversa la natura dei nervi e si interrogò oggettivamente sul loro comportamento. Realizzò il suo studio con la stimolazione sia meccanica che elettrica e pervenne ad una rigorosa e definitiva formulazione delle proprietà dei nervi. Secondo la sua tesi i nervi anteriori erano destinati al movimento, i nervi posteriori, invece, a condurre gli impulsi nervosi. Inoltre, caratteristica di quest'ultimi, era la "sensibilità ricorrente" ovvero la loro costante e continua capacità di trasmettere l'impulso nervoso, al contrario dei nervi anteriori che si dividevano in sensibili, parzialmente insensibili e completamente insensibili.
