James Ware (1756?1815), surgeon and oculist, studied under Jonathan Wathen and from 1777 to 1791 shared his London practice which specialised in the treatment of diseases of the eye. Ware was the first "bare oculist" to be elected Fellow of the Royal Society of London, a distinction that greatly contributed to the recognition of ophthalmic surgery as a scientific endeavour.

Sichel vint à Paris en 1832, où il établit la première clinique ophtalmologique rue Jacob. Il introduisit en France l'usage de l'ophtalmoscope, inventé par Helmholtz (1850). Originariamente pubblicato nel 1713, questo lavoro contiene una traduzione del lavoro di Anel con i commenti di Melli, e le critiche di Signorotti a Anel.
