First edition, 8vo (225 x 140 mm), ix, [1], 91, [1]pp., (16 page publishers catalogue tipped in at front), contemporary previous owners name on half-title, chromolithographic frontispiece with 3 figures, 2 lithographic plates showing single convergent, double convergent and divergent strabismus of the eyes and the instruments used for the operation, original cloth, printed paper label rubbed, uncut. This was the first publication in English on a surgical cure for crossed eyes and describes the cases treated, as well as some new views on the anatomy and physiology of the muscles of the eye. In the preface the author gives credit to Professor Dieffenbach, of Berlin, ".... of being the first surgeon to put into operation the division of muscles for the cure of deformities of the human eye." Rara edizione originale di questo classico della storia dell'oftalmica, dedicato all'operazione della pupilla artificiale, sistema gia' esperimentato dal celebre Assalini ed esposto nel suo saggio sulla pupilla artificiale pubblicato nel 1811. Adams fu allievo di J. Hill e nel 1805, spostatosi a Londra conobbe J. Cunningham Sauders che aveva appena aperto un ospedale per la cura dell'occhio. Adams assistette cosi' a molte operazioni oftalmiche e dopo qualche anno divenne chirurgo a Exeter. Di grande interesse la presenza della bella dedica ad Assalini, con riferimenti ad un paziente e a un'operazione oftalmica. La firma a questa importante dedica non e' ben identificabile, non sembrando quella di Adams. Sicuramente puo' trattarsi di altro oculista di rilievo, essendo in rapporti con l'Assalini.
