ill., ril.

The original Document Koen is one of the most notorious photobooks from Japan. This follow-up paperback features photos from the first section of that book with text and diagrams. "The abstract, somewhat inexplicit nature of Document Kouen (Document Park) raises few issues regarding the depiction of sex, but it does generate a whole slew of questions concerning voyeurism, privacy and stalking. It may indeed be considered a documentary book about sexual practices rather than a sex book in itself, although the voyeuristic nature of the images feeds back into both what is going on and how it was documented. To make the book, Yoshiyuki trawled the Shinjuku and Yoyogi parks in Tokyo, both notorious for nocturnal sexual activity, and photographed the 'goings-on' with infrared flash, which enabled him to get images in the dark without the flash being visible. One suspects that this was done less for reasons of concealment and more for the brittle, indeterminate aesthetic produced, for these seem to be semi-public events, with more voyeuristic spectators than people actually taking part in the various sexual activities... nominally a soft-core voyeur's manual, Document Kouen is somewhat short on titillation. It is, however, a brilliant piece of social documentation, catching perfectly the loneliness, sadness and desperation that so often accompany sexual or human relationships in a big metropolis like Tokyo."--Parr & Badger, The Photobook: A History, Volume 2, pp. 296-297 — Testi: Kimura Shinya. Yoshiyuki was a young commercial photographer in Tokyo in the early 1970s when he and a colleague walked through Chuo Park in Shinjuku one night. He noticed a couple on the ground, and then one man creeping toward them, followed by another. "I had my camera, but it was dark," he told the photographer Nobuyoshi Araki in a 1979 interview for a Japanese publication. Researching the technology in the era before infrared flash units, he found that Kodak made infrared flashbulbs. Yoshiyuki returned to the park, and to two others in Tokyo, through the '70s. He photographed heterosexual and homosexual couples engaged in sexual activity and the peeping toms who stalked them. — F.to: 21x26; pagg. 90; BN; rileg. brossura. Editore: Sebun-sha, Tokyo, 1980.

"In The Garden of Sodom, Yoshioka pushes the process of demolishing the concept of harmony to the extreme. Here nude women are shown tied up, assaulted, entangled in tortuous and confused embraces with men and other women of all ages. These women display a varying - but always indecipherable - range of emotions; none appears, not surprisingly, in a morally positive light. The feeling one has when leafing through the book is of seeing Japanese society presented as a new Sodom. The photographer seems to have taken some pleasure in being an artist disapproved of by the establishment. As the film director Oshima said, in the eyes of society, making art had become a criminal act."
