1930218616Japan. Circa1930. 79 black and white photographs 43pp 18.2 x 25.5cm bound in a black velvet covered photograph album with string ties bearing what is likely a class insignia. Three photographs are loosely inserted a few have been removed some photographs are attached using photo corners most laid down some browning fading or wear but generally the photographs are in good to very good condition. Some of the planes depicted are identifiable as early models of biplanes. A group photograph of military officers at Onohara Airstrip likely in Kyushu is dated July 1904. These biplanes were primarily operated by the Imperial Japanese Army. The album also includes two striking photographs of a plane flying over the crater of Mount Fuji as well as scenes of what appears to be the Yalu River Liaoyang and an industrial plant in Manchuria.

Additionally there are images of a Ryan NYP-type plane with the identification number J-BACC. This particular aircraft was purchased by the Mainichi Newspaper Company in 1927 for promotional purposes inspired by Charles Lindbergh's historic transatlantic flight in the same type of plane. Also included is a photograph of a Dornier Do J Wal in Deutsche Luft Hansa livery. The final photograph features a diagram of a Zenith carburettor adding a technical dimension to this fascinating collection.

This album not only captures the early days of aviation in Japan but also reflects the personal passion of its owner offering a unique glimpse into the intersection of personal history and technological progress during the early 20th century. . unknown

Original orange cloth with printed paper label affixed to cover in facsimile yellow photo-illustrated dustjacket. Textured endpapers. Title page printed in brown. Rights reserved and printed by E. Beaufort A. S.

This work is Drtikol's seminal collection of nude studies. "Although influenced early in his career while studying photography in Munich by the decorative trend of Jugendstil or Art Nouveau Drtikol moved with Žena ve Světle into his own modernist style of photography that prefigured and influenced the emerging Bauhaus aesthetic. He built sets and props out of plywood and used an arc lamp to cast strong shadows. The graphic presentation of the book is striking with the gum prints on thin paper one to a page set off by large page numbers. By 1935 Drtikol was creating wholly abstract works in which the nudes were replaced by figurines or geometric shapes made from painted plywood. At age 52 at the peak of his international fame Drtikol abandoned photography altogether to concentrate on painting meditation and oriental philosophy until his death in 1961." In every Soviet state hundreds of thousands of rural peasants were moved off their own small holdings and relocated to one of the large collective farms kohlkozy or as here to State-run agricultural factories sovkhozy. State-owned farms like the one portrayed in this album operated under somewhat stricter conditions - in the words of one contemporary observer ".it is perhaps incorrect to speak of 'forced' labor in connection with the sovkhozy.but it is quite reasonable to designate this labor as 'militarized'." The fact that this farm was run by the NKVD the Soviet internal security apparatus means its residents were almost certainly present on a punitive or at least rehabilitative basis: as the agency principally responsible for ferreting out and suppressing counter-revolutionary tendencies among the vast Soviet populace the NKVD would have had little other reason to be involved in the operation of an agricultural enterprise. The use of the sovkhoz as a tool of repression especially in the early days of collectivization is well documented: the collective system was coercive and unwelcome to many if not most of the peasants whom it affected. "What is especially dangerous for the stability of the new agricultural system in Soviet Russia - introduced in such a hurry - is the fact that it was put into effect with coercive methods the system being forced on the peasantry and being accompanied by a cruel campaign against the well-to-do peasantry i.e kulaks quoted from Vladimir Timoshenko "The New Agricultural Policy of Soviet Russia" in Journal of Farm Economics v.13 no.2 April 1931.

To counter some of the negative views of collectivization a large-scale propaganda campaign was initiated and some of the leading Soviet photographers of the period including Georgy Petrusov Evgeny Khaldei V. Teterin Ivan Shagin Arkady Shaikhet among others were employed to present an idealized version of life on the collective farms. The current album clearly intended to convey this sense of the rural ideal was likely produced by the Directors of the Sovkhoz Sergo Ordzhonikidze named ironically for a one-time ally of Stalin's who had been assassinated in the Great Purge for presentation to a regional state official. In more than 100 hand-captioned images the album portrays every aspect of the enterprise from fields of dairy cattle to chicken hatcheries to leisure-hour activities. The workers are uniformly happy and well-fed their surroundings ideally pastoral the machinery clean new and efficient. One can only speculate what conditions prevailed in the absence of a photographer's lens.

The photographs themselves are clearly professional: technically and compositionally sophisticated they are exemplars of the form produced in an era when the Soviets had raised the photographic arts to a high level in service to their considerable propaganda needs. Of particular interest are numerous interior photographs documenting industrial activities at the farm - maintenance of the boiler rooms and garages; canning operations; the blacksmith's shop etc: even though staged these are extraordinary photographs of a depth and quality one would associate with the flagship Soviet photographic magazines of the period and there were several the most prominent being Sovetskoe Foto which ran from 1926-1977 and USSR in Construction 1930-1941.

Despite our belief that these images were likely the work of one of the prominent Soviet photo-documentarians of the period attempts to match the images to a known photographer have proved fruitless. Of the names listed above these images most resemble the work of Evgeny Khaldei who would become famous for his photojournalism during the Second World War; but we find no evidence within the album attributing the work to him or any other photographer. Nonetheless a valuable documentation of pre-War Soviet agricultural life and a quite remarkable collection of images. unknown

1870List3651N.p. 1870. Carte-de-visite novelty card. Albumen print illustration mounted on standard CDV card approximately 2.5 x 4 inches. Very good condition with light toning and minor surface wear. A macabre humorous novelty carte-de-visite showing a coffin containing the caricatured head of a deceased man beneath the caption “THIS POOR MAN WAS TALKED TO DEATH.†The image parodies the visual language of Victorian mourning culture—coffins memorial imagery and epitaphs—while transforming it into a comic vignette. The joke plays on the familiar nineteenth-century phrase “talked to death†a hyperbolic expression suggesting that someone has been overwhelmed by excessive conversation advice or gossip. The phrase circulated in popular folklore and humor of the period and was sometimes linked to the Victorian medical diagnosis of “prostration†a condition describing physical collapse from stress or agitation. Comic and satirical CDVs formed a lively subgenre during the height of the carte-de-visite craze of the 1860s and 1870s. Publishers produced novelty cards featuring visual puns mock memorial imagery and caricature intended for display in photograph albums alongside conventional portraits. The playful use of coffin imagery reflects a broader Victorian taste for humorous memento mori motifs within popular graphic culture. unknown
