A cabinet card photograph depicting a young African American man standing/posing next to a large urn type piece. Taken by Henry Sonnenberg a German born photographer who apparently produced many cabinet cards in the Pittsburgh and Allegheny areas of Pennsylvania. FAIR condition. Moderate chipping and peeling along the extremities with minor loss of card stock in a few areas. Photo rather faded with some soiling spotting and staining. 1860215051860. African American Sixth plate tintype featuring a young African American woman and an African American girl likely mother and daughter posed before a wall covered with floral wallpaper. Both of them wear light cotton dresses the woman dons an updo hair style with ringlet bangs the young girl's hair scalp length. Measures 3.25" x 4". Housed in a half pressed paper case. These portraits come from a time just after emancipation when African Americans were creating new lives for themselves. Photography was one way to commemorate freedom and memorialize prosperity the formerly impossible made possible. Overall very good condition. unknown
