Paris dimanche 2 avril 1758 13.40 x 19.20 cm 2 feuillets Will of Louise-Anne de Bourbon-Condé known as Mademoiselle de Charolais copied by the hand of Jean-Baptiste-François-Joseph Count de Sade and father of the Marquis in which the latter makes her nephew Louis-François Joseph de Bourbon Prince de Conti her universal legatee. A second part concerns bequests to livery servants to chambermaids and valets to the wardrobe keeper etc. Footnote in the hand of the Marquis de Sade: ""known as Mademoiselle de Charolais"". Attached is a note sheet written in Sade's hand with a view to publishing his father's correspondence. This will was written five days before the death of Mademoiselle de Charolais whose death occurred on Friday April 7 1758 following three months of illness. The second part of the will is dated Sunday April 2 1758 while the first bears the date of Sunday April 12 1758: this is obviously an erroneous date. The entirety of this copy was written by the hand of the Count de Sade who lived with Mademoiselle de Charolais at her château of Athis-Mons from 1750 until her death. The young Count de Sade sent by his father to Paris around 1720 had as protector Louis-Henri de Bourbon Prince de Condé known as Monsieur le Duc. Upon his arrival the young man appreciated court life and ""Rare thing he pleased women without making himself hated by men: hence the number of his friends at least as high as that of his mistresses. . M. de Sade was not content with easy conquests; bourgeois women left him indifferent. Those he sought - and most often conquered - were court women not only endowed with wit and beauty but also adorned with an illustrious name credit influence or fortune capable in a word of serving his interests and putting him in good standing at court."" Lever Sade. Among his conquests figured Mademoiselle de Charolais seven years his senior sister of his protector and then royal mistress. Little desirous of marrying she preferred all her life to remain unmarried and multiplied adventures and prestigious lovers. She was notably the favorite of the Duke de Richelieu but also of Louis XV for whom she recruited numerous mistresses thus earning the sobriquet of ""royal procuress"". The carnal encounter between Mademoiselle de Charolais and the Count de Sade took place on November 24 1725 while the latter was confined to bed because of a sprain. A letter from Louise-Anne attests to this nascent adventure: ""November 24 is the most beautiful day of my life if I have regained possession of my kingdom and my sovereignty by the rights of the bed where I swore you an oath of fidelity. I count on having received yours and I now live for the prettiest king in the world."" Papiers de famille p.20. The passion was not reciprocal however and the fickle Count de Sade soon met the Duchess de la Trémoïlle. Thus distancing himself from Mademoiselle de Charolais he wrote to her by way of breaking up: ""I regarded Madam the advances you made to me as provocation of your mind and not of your heart. I did not have the honor of knowing you I owed you nothing a sprain obliged me to keep to my room I was idle there your letters were pretty they amused me I flattered myself if it were true that I had made your conquest that you might cure me of an unfortunate passion which occupies me entirely."" op. cit. p.23. In 1752 the Count de Sade was ruined by his lifestyle he had sent young Donatien to Louis-le-Grand college and lodged with his good friend Mademoiselle de Charolais at the château of Athis-Mons: ""I have retired to Mademoiselle's although it is cruel at my age to depend on someone to reduce my expenses."" Letter from the Count de Sade to his uncle the provost of L'Isle-sur-Sorgue November 11 1752. He remained with his friend accompanying her in her numerous travels across Europe until her death. In original printed wraps with the last two pages of the catalogue on the back cover. 704 priced items with descriptions. Reproduction of no. 612 mezzotint of Napoleon by Charles Turner from J. J. Masquerier on front cover. In fair condition on aged paper in aged and worn wraps with occasional pencil markings in margins. An important catalogue issued in part to make a point during the Great War. The most valuable item by far covering nearly half a page is 223 a copy of Wheeler and Broadley's 'Napoleon and the Invasion of England' 'extra-illustrated and extended to 4 volumes' at £130. The final four sections are 'The map of Europe in the time of Napoleon' pp.35-37; 'Engravings' pp.37-42; 'Napoleonic Caricatures' pp.42-44 and 'Autograph Letters and Manuscripts' pp.44-46. No. 749 priced at £50 is Gen. Gaspard Gourgaud's 'Manuscripts respecting Napoleon I. in his autograph'; its twenty-line description begins with 'The Original Manuscript of a Portion of Napoleon's Own Memoirs dictated to Gen. Gourgaud at St. Helena 11pp. folio.' Also present is a letter by Napoleon's mother priced at £14 and transcribed in full. Photographer unidentified but based on location and outfit likely taken during a 1968 photo session at the LBJ Ranch by Frank Wolfe LBJ's official White House photographer. An attractive large-format professional portrait of LBJ in casual dress kneeling in a pasture with his trademark Stetson resting on his knee. An excellent association; Cartha "Deke" De Loach was Deputy Associate Director of the FBI during the Hoover era and a close associate of LBJ's; in 1963 immediately after the assassination of John F. Kennedy Johnson had De Loach assigned to permanent duty at the White House. As described by New York Times reporter Tim Weiner "De Loach was always at L.B.J.'s beck and call night and day he was a talented political hatchet man a trusted deputy to Hoover. He was also crucial to intelligence investigations conducted during the Johnson presidency." Based on the tenor of the inscription we surmise that the portrait was presented to De Loach at the end of Johnson's presidency in 1968. unknown

20938One of the great unsung American inventors and timepiece pioneers was this New Jersey watchmaker who held more than 40 patents but is remembered for the "calculagraph" a device that records times and calculates the difference; one of its first uses was in 1894 in New York where it recorded the length of telephone calls and impressed AT & T so much they installed it nationwide; his other inventions include a watch winding system that resulted in watches being wound by their stem instead of with a key and a revolutionary method for making enamel watch dials. 31715Influential Congregational clergyman and author who co-edited "Christian Union" with Henry Ward Beecher and succeeded Beecher as pastor of Brooklyn's famed Plymouth Congregational Church. ANS 1p 5" X 8" Cornwall-on-Hudson NY n.y. 1878 November 25. Addressed to showman P.T. Barnum 1810-91. Very good. Lightly age toned. Intriguing if brief: "Your letter respecting Popular Amusements was received too late for this week's issue. It will go in next week & the papers shall be sent as requested." In Abbott's 1922 book "Silhouettes of My Contemporaries" he devotes a chapter to Barnum of whom he was a great admirer. In 1878 Abbott wrote Barnum requesting information about Tom Thumb and on 5 October 1878 received a cordial note in reply from Barnum. Meanwhile in the November 6th and 13th issues of "Christian Union" Reverend Samuel Scoville published a two-art article titled "The Christian View of Popular Amusements." Barnum took issue with some of this Congregationalist minister's views and in the December 4th issue his rebuttal titled simply "Popular Amusements" was published in "Christian Union." This letter then is the magazine's initial response to Barnum's reply to Scoville's criticisms. The article was republished a number of times in other publications and also found its way into Barnum's 1880 autobiography "Struggles and Triumphs; or Forty Years' Recollections. unknown

Oldroyd's 1882 book "The Lincoln Memorial: Album-Immortelles" a collection of reminiscences and sentiments about Lincoln by notables of the day. Abbott carefully and neatly inks in words and phrases and crosses out others signing at the close unusually small and neat knowing this would be the actual signaturee reproduced in the book and adding the date and place. A fine philosophical statement reading in part: ".It was the peculiar genius of Abraham Lincoln that he was able by his sympathetic insight to perceive the change in public sentiment without waiting for it to be formulated in any legislative action; to keep pace with it to lead and direct it to quicken laggard spirits to hold in the too ardent too impetuous and too hasty ones and thus when he signed the emancipation proclamation to make his signature not the act of an individual man the edict of a military imperator but the representative act of a great nation." Accompanying this typescript is an actual page from Oldroyd's book bearing Abbott's statement pp. 81-82 and this reproduced signature. Accompanied by a Typed Letter Signed bearing his usual charismatic ebullient signature 1p 5½" X 8½" Cornwall-on-Hudson NY 1881 December 7. Addressed to Osborn H. Oldroyd. Near fine. 42167This famed Chicago utility company executive began with the Chicago Telephone Company around the turn of the century and by 1922 when this had morphed into Illinois Bell Telephone Company he served as its president until 1930 and then as chairman of the Board 1930-34; in 1930 he became president of Chicago's Museum of Science and Industry. TLS 1p 8" X 11" Chicago IL 26 September 1929. Addressed to Waldemar Kaempffert Director of the Rosenwald Industrial Museum in Chicago. Very good. Lightly age toned and mildly edgeworn with original folds visible and slight mounting trace not affecting text at upper left. On "Illinois Bell Telephone Company" letterhead listing him as president Abbott writes to the just-named first director of this museum founded and funded by Sears Roebuck Company president and philanthropist Julius Rosenwald which the following year would be renamed the Museum of Science and Industry and would have a new director. Abbott goes into great detail about "the New York Telephone rate case" of 1921 which involved "the estimated savings effected in New York City by the use of the Pupin loading coil" and other technicalities; he closes by offering Kaempffert "The following pamphlets giving information as to Bell System activities." and spells out their titles. Boldly signed "W.R. Abbott" in black ink at lower right. Whether this business somehow involved the museum is unclear though likely -- and fascinating in any case. unknown
21794Abruzzo was an American businessman turned hot air balloonist; Anderson was a career balloonist with many "firsts" to his name; and Newman co-invented the ultra-light airplane piloted the first balloon flight across the Pacific Ocean in 1981 and manufactured experimental aircraft. In 1978 these three piloted the Double Eagle II in the first Transatlantic balloon crossing departing Maine on August 11 and landing in France six days later. For their achievement they were awarded the Congressional Gold Medal in 1979. Signed commemorative postal cover honoring this achievement 6½" X 3½" cancelled in Albuquerque New Mexico on April 20 1979. Envelope bears the 13-cent "French Alliance 1778" stamp and 4-cent "A Public That Reads" stamp and a special postal cancellation featuring an image of the Double Eagle balloon and the caption "Double Eagle II / First Transatlantic Balloon Flight." No decorative printed cachet at left; no distracting recipient's name/address present. Newman signs boldly in black marker near the top adding "Double Eagle II" below his signature; below this Abruzzo signs boldly and below him Anderson too signs boldly. Anderson died in a balloon crash in Germany and Abruzzo in a private plane crash -- the Anderson-Abruzzo Albuquerque International Balloon Museum is named in their honor. Also present is a small portion of the original mailing envelope used to transmit this cover cancelled in Albuquerque July 26 1976. An Albuquerque philatelic connection is relevant for the Double Eagle II crew were among those who established this town as the ballooning capital of the world. IPS 8" X 10" n.p. n.d. ca. early 1960s. Very good. Faint tape stain at each corner. Handsome head-and-shoulders portrait of the young star in his best-known role clad in buckskin and kepi and clutching his rifle. Centered near the bottom he boldly inscribes and signs in vibrant green fountain pen: "To Donald Burnell / Best wishes / Nick Adams / THE REBEL." These last two line are preprinted in greytone on the photograph itself but Adams neatly traces over them. Adams' sudden death at age 36 makes inscribed photographs rather scarce. unknown

34183This well-known French poet novelist and playwright was elected member of the Académie française in 1909; his home at La Garde on the French Riviera is now a museum. AMS 20pp rectos only. 8" X 10 3/4" n.p. n.y. ca. 1890. Very good to near fine. Custom bound in half grey cloth with gilt spine lettering and marbled paper over boards. Binding is very good showing mild edgewear. Holograph manuscript for "La Noel du petit Jean" penned boldly in black ink on heavy stock leaves and boldly signed at the conclusion. Clearly a working draft for it contains crossouts insertions and corrections throughout. Apparently this was a novel for the journal "Bulletin Bibliographique" and other scholarly sources of 1890-91 list an Aicard work by this title one even noting 754 pages -- though perhaps these are lists of works in progress for no published novel by this title can be found. To confuse matters further the gilt title of this bound manuscript notes "1909" although this could be an error or simply the year this was bound. After the closing signature on the final leaf Aicard pens the address of the "journal le Figaro" in Paris. An intriguing manuscript worthy of further research. unknown

Aiken Vermont Republican the administration's farm leader in the Senate is shown leaving the White House after attending a Republican legislative leaders' meeting yesterday." Il faudra enfin décider un jour ou l'autre sans aucun mystère que la Défense Nationale est républicaine."" ""This general minister had in sum responded very nobly. We must finally decide one day or another without any mystery that National Defense is republican."" Indeed the newly elected minister sought to redefine relations between political power and military authorities. Alain reproaches the military world for its opacity ""Comment la France sera-t-elle défendue Nous n'en savons rien. . chez nous même les députés ne s'en font aucune idée."" ""How will France be defended We know nothing about it. . even our deputies have no idea."" before proposing solutions: ""Donc il faudrait qu'il soit bien entendu que chaque chef garde une large initiative dans l'exécution d'un programme déterminé. Et ce programme ne dépend pas seulement de la science militaire ; c'est aux ministres avec le conseil des grands chefs qu'il appartient de le déterminer."" ""Therefore it should be well understood that each leader retains broad initiative in executing a determined program.
