25221The 1960 4-cent "John Foster Dulles" postage stamp designed by William K. Schrage uses a portrait taken by this State Department photographer who retired at an early age when he began to lose his eyesight and died at a young age. Signed Postal Cover 6½" X 3½" n.p. n.y. Single mint "John Foster Dulles" stamp at upper right. At the center in black ballpoint Keith signs boldly. Original transmittal envelope also signed by Keith at upper left with return address in his hand also present -- cancelled in Washington DC on 1971 July 26 just a few months shy of Keith's death in November 1971. A most uncommon signature on a choice piece. unknown
40474This Union officer served on the staff of Brigadier General James Shields whose troops faced Stonewall Jackson's Confederate troops in the Shenandoah Valley in June 1862 and later commanded the Second Louisiana Regiment Cavalry; he was a good friend of famed Irish soldier Miles W. Keogh 1840-76 killed in the Battle of the Little Bighorn who served under him in the Papal Army during the Italian rebellion in 1860 and who fought with him in the Battle of Port Republic; he's reported to have become enamored with famed Southern spy "Belle" Boyd" at one point and to have unwittingly revealed military secrets to her. Outstanding pencilled ANS 2pp recto and verso heavy stock 4" X 2½" card "Conrad's Bridge" Virginia n.d. ca. early June 1862. Addressed to "General" probably James Shields. Very good. Lightly age toned.In this remarkable small report Keily reports in a small tight but fairly legible hand to his commander that "Col. Carroll moves his comm'd. at p.m. and will push on as rapidly as possible some cannonading heard this morning in the direction of Harrisonburg I would respectfully submit that if the Infantry did not move rapidly enough to carry out your views at Wainesborough before Jacksons arrival there a reconnaisance composed of cavalry conducted cautiously might attain the object with a good Guide which we have procured I would be glad to undertake it -- respectfully" and signs off adding his rank "Capt. A.D.C" beneath. A rather light challenging to transcribe postscript reads "P.S. Just received information from a reliable source that Jackson has --- --- --- Train on the --- Pt. Republic Road." It's difficult to precisely date Keily's note but General Shields did write General McDowell on June 4 1862 that "Colonel Carroll. after a forced night's march reached Conrad's Bridge this morning at 5 o'clock which bridge he found burned" -- which likely dates Keily's letter from this date or shortly after. Whether Shields took Keily up on his offer to lead a cavalry reconnaissance is unclear. Shields 1810-79 is perhaps best remembered as the Illinois politician who almost fought a duel with Abraham Lincoln in 1842; he's also the only person in American history to serve as U.S. senator from three different states Illinois Minnesota and Missouri; as a brigadier general of volunteers in the Civil War his lackluster performance as commander of the 2nd Division of the V Corps in the Army of the Potomac during the crucial Valley Campaign caused him to resign his commission. On June 9th the Battle of Port Republic took place a costly Confederate victory in which Jackson's 6000 troops faced off 3500 Union troops losing just over 800 men to the Union's loss of just over 1000 men -- a battle at which Keily himself was severely wounded in the face while leading a charge of Ohio cavalry up a hill into a barrage of Confederate artillery fire. The following year after painful recuperation Keily ended up on the staff of General Charles P. Stone in New Orleans recruiting cavalry troops in that occupied state. Late in the war he was court-martialed for "conduct unbecoming an officer" but the charges were shown false and by the end of the war he was brevetted a brigadier general. Keily died from yellow fever in Louisiana at age 38 shortly after the war's end making his autograph material quite scarce -- and a choice war-date item such as this most desirable. This remarkable war-date communication sheds interesting light on Shields as commander during the disastrous Valley Campaign. unknown

37961This German Luftwaffe fighter ace was the last group commander of the 2nd Jagdgeschwader II./JG2 and a Knight's Cross recipient downing 47 enemy aircraft many of them over the English Channel and in North Africa. ALS 1p 8¼" X 11" Bayreuth Germany 1 August 1997. Addressed to Gerry D. Fridlund. Fine. On lined stock Karch pens an American admirer in black ballpoint entirely in German. He notes that many of his things were destroyed in a bombing attack just before the end of World War Two and he lost all of his photographs from 1944 and 1945 and therefore can't fulfill his request for an image from this period; he encloses a photograph from October 1943 showing him conversing with officers from his unit at their air base in Normandy. Boldly signed. The photograph is included being a modern high quality print 3½" X 5". On the blank lower margin Karch signs boldly. Also present is the original mailing envelope addressed in Karch's hand and signed by him again on the verso along with his home address. unknown

Julien Gracq expresses his regret that his friend Ariel Denis was not selected despite his intervention by the Berlin Academy to teach: ""Je vous avais recommandé de mon mieux mais je doute que cela ait été en Allemagne d'une grande efficacité. Je sais d'ailleurs que comme vous le pressentiez les concurents étaient en nombre."" ""I recommended you as best I could but I doubt that was very effective in Germany. I know moreover that as you suspected there were many competitors."" To help his friend the author of Rivage des Syrtes suggested to publisher Seghers who wanted to publish a work about him in his famous ""Poètes d'aujourd'hui"" collection the name of Ariel Denis having had no news from the first biographer considered for this publication: ""Ils me demandent de leur suggérer un nom. J'ai indiqué celui de Lautrat. Et j'ai indiqué le vôtre ne sachant bien sûr aucunement si un travail de ce genre pourrait vous plaire. An engaging letter in which Jules Romains corresponds with the painter Dignimont about the forthcoming illustrated edition of his sweeping novel cycle Hommes de bonne volonté: ""J'ai beaucoup pensé cette fois-ci encore aux belles compositions que vous nous avez montrées samedi. Je continue à trouver tout cela très important."" Romains' remarks are revealing as they highlight the divergence between how he envisioned his characters and how his friend interpreted them: ""Est-ce que nos deux jeunes gens ne font pas encore un peu trop rupin. . Je verrais de Marquis de St Papoul avec un visage plus maigre et plus allongé un peu donquichottesque."" He concludes with an apology for his demands: ""Hélas ! Je suis embêtant. Mais j'aime tellement vos compositions que je me permets d'y rêver comme si je les avais faites moi-même."" The illustrated edition would be published in 1954 by Flammarion marking the sole collaboration between the Académie Française member and the Montmartre painter. unknown

Fine letter to this fellow writer alluding to Poil de Carotte: ""Je suis au moins aussi content que vous. Certes je n'avais pas oublié le manuscrit où Poil de Carotte était si bien compris - et aimé - j'avais oublié la signature."" ""I am at least as pleased as you are. Certainly I had not forgotten the manuscript where Poil de Carotte was so well understood - and loved - I had forgotten the signature."" He mentions Gabrielle Réval's book: ""Et tant mieux ; car j'ai lu les Sèvriennes et non le livre d'une amie de Poil de Carotte. L'auteur seul a plu le lecteur seul a été touché. Il y a de belles réussites vous le voyez madame."" ""So much the better; for I read the Sèvriennes and not the book of a friend of Poil de Carotte. The author alone pleased the reader alone was moved. There are beautiful successes you see madam."" Jules Renard already enjoyed considerable success at this time: ""Il me répugnerait de jour au vieux maître sachez pourtant que j'ai déjà reçu bien des livres écrit bien des lettres en quelle proportion par politesse je ne sais plus mais aucune ne fut plus spontanée que celle dont vous me remerciez aimablement."" The highly laudatory letter alluded to here is preserved at the Jean Jaurès Media Library in Nevers and was written by Renard a few days before ours: ""Ce n'est pas l'auteur des Sévriennes que je remercie c'est vous. C'est grâce à vous que j'ai lu par cette froide fin de mai entre la première rose de mon jardin et les dernières flammes de ma cheminée un beau Livre."" ""It is not the author of the Sévriennes that I thank it is you. It is thanks to you that I read during this cold end of May between the first rose of my garden and the last flames of my fireplace a beautiful Book.""
