Signed First Day Cover 6½" X 3½" cancelled in Shreveport Louisiana on July 11 1978 and with "First Day of Issue" marked. Eight 15-cent rose stamps affixed. No decorative cachet or distracting recipient's name/address. Warriner signs boldly in black ballpoint right on the "sweet spot." Extremely attractive and surprisingly uncommon. 22771The youngest daughter full name Anna Cabot Lodge Quincy Waterston of Boston Mayor and Harvard president Josiah Quincy dabbled in the arts writing poems "Verses" 1863 nonfiction "Adelaide Phillipps: A Record" 1883 and Unitarian hymns; in 2003 her diary was published "A Woman's Wit & Whimsy: The 1833 Diary of Anna Cabot Lodge Quincy" chronicling the life of a 21-year-old aristocrat on the Harvard campus. Bold attractive "With many pleasant memories / of our visit to your happy and / beautiful home I shall / always be your affectionate friend / Anna C.L. Waterston / Fort Washington / 1862" on a 5" X 3¼" slip. Near fine. It's interesting that Fort Washington 16 miles south of Washington DC was built in June of that year 1863 for the New York State Militia during the Gettysburg Campaign so clearly this must have been penned there in the months immediately following its construction. Original printed text neatly attached to verso dates this January 12 1953 and under the headline "Eisenhower and Full Cabinet Meet for First Time" the scene is described: "President-Elect Dwight Eisenhower today assembled for the first time his entire cabinet to chart the course his administration will steer when it takes over the reins of government in eight days." Titled "for Billy Doris Queenie Donna June and John" this is an original probably one-of-a-kind quatrain written especially for a small class of disabled school children thanking them in verse: "Thank you for your message and / The thank-you picture made by hand / Thank you each and every one -- / I hope you have a lot of fun." Somewhat tremulous but bold easily legible and attractive. A charming example of the vintage versifier's graciousness. unknown

Public's spokesman for many years; he published and edited "The Emporia Gazette" from 1895 until his death. Huge and bold "W.A. White / Emporia / Kansas / January / 1935" in black ink on a buff heavy stock 5½" X 3¼" postal card. Verso addressed in type to Arnold F. Gates 1914-93 noted Lincoln and Civil War scholar and cancelled in Emporia on 8 January 1935. Near fine. Accompanied by a superb glossy 8½" X 6½" black and white news agency photograph International News Photo depicting a large head-and-shoulders bust of White with three persons standing alongside. Original mimeographed paper label neatly affixed to verso dated 21 March 1947 titles this scene "Unveil Bust of Famed Editor" and describes it: "Shown beside the bronze bust of the late William Allen White famed editor of The Emporia Kansas Gazette as it was unveiled today at the French Galleries 210 East 57th St. are the Hon. Ora Rindon mayor of Emporia; Mrs. William Allen White the widow and Jo Davidson the sculptor. Wilson approves this mini-biography with a bold "OK / C.E.W." This item comes with a fine 7" X 9" glossy news agency photograph of 1953 depicting Wilson addressing newsreel cameras outside the Senate Office Building. Wilson of Wilson & Company entered the sporting goods field on a lark in the 1920s little did he imagine that his son who became one of the youngest top executives in the country in 1934 when he stepped into the presidency at age 29 would transform both into influential giants in their fields; in 1953 Edward became chairman of the board and soon after left the business to become of all things Assistant Secretary of Health Education and Welfare under Eisenhower. Christmas keepsake printed in a small quantity for distribution by Senator Yarborough 1903-96 Democratic senator from Texas who rode in the Dallas motorcade carrying President Kennedy in 1963 designed for him by Encino Press's founder William D. Wittliff better known these days as the screenwriter for "The Perfect Storm" and other films. The text consists of a speech that Yarborough gave at the unveiling of the Sam Houston five-cent commemorative stamp in where else Houston on 10 January 1964. On the front page he boldly signs and inscribes in in black fineline: "For Ralph Newman -- Who knows the many facets of Sam Houston -- and the Documents which come from each one -- May the Holidays Cheer you and 1972 improve your already enriched life" signed and dated December 1972. Ralph G. Newman 1912-2000 founded Chicago's noted Abraham Lincoln Book Shop and no doubt supplied Yarborough with Houston and other documents for his collection. With original stamped and cancelled envelope signed by Yarborough at upper left and addressed in his huge flamboyant hand. A choice presentation copy of a very uncommon Encino Press publication. Yarborough thanks the president of Lincoln University for the honorary degree being conferred upon him but regrets he cannot attend the ceremony: "It now appears that my obligations are such that as a practicing attorney I cannot leave Texas that day This is to express my deep regret to you which I hope you will convey to President Emeritus and Mrs. Raymond N. Dooley under whose administration I was granted this honorary Doctor of Humane Letters Degree." He encloses not present "a small token for the expenses you will incur" and pleads poverty: "It is so small that I am almost embarrassed to include it but having been unsuccessful in my campaign to remain in the United States Senate in 1970 and to return there in 1972 I am deep in debt from those campaigns and have been forced to curtail temporarily I hope other things which I would like to support." Alfred Austin 1835-1913 an English poet who served as Poet Laureate from 1896. 3. H Rider Haggard 1856-1925. This one appears to be rather a rushed signature but featuring the pen strokes common with his autograph.
