14695Influential British locomotive engineer executive and innovator; as Locomotive Superintendent of the London & North Western Railway Company from 1871 to 1903 his word was law and in the city of Crewe where the L. & N.W.R. operated its "Crewe Works" he was known as "The King of Crewe." Rare signed production photograph most likely a heliotype heavy stock 24" X 16" Crewe England 1891. Very good. Light even age toning except verso where acidic backing has darkened unevenly; several small archivally closed on verso edge tears; very slight waviness at some edges. This piece actually consists of three separate images tipped to the heavy 24" X 16" sheet: Center image 14" X 11½" shows this locomotive in close-up profile left side image 3½" X 11½" shows a frontal view and right side image also 3½" X 11½" shows a rear view. Titled "Eight-Wheeled Compound Express Passenger Locomotive" in large typeface below the center image with "F.W. Webb's System" below that in smaller typeface and two lines of technical statistics at the bottom "High-pressure Cylinders 15 in. diam. x 24 in. stroke. Low-pressure Cylinder 30 in. diam. x 24 in. stroke. Driving Wheels 7 ft. 1 in. diam. / Leading Wheels radial. Fixed Wheel base 8 ft. 3 in. Trailing Wheels ½ in. side play.". In the latter part of the 19th century Webb took a leading role in the development of compound locomotives -- those in which the steam operates more than one set of cylinders. The locomotive depicted here is part of the "Greater Britain" class a type of eight-wheeled express engine featuring an extra long combustion chamber and distinguished by their 7 foot 1 inch driving wheel; of these Webb designed ten models. The first of these appeared in 1891 -- and may well be the version depicted in this print. At the lower right corner above the printed text "Crewe Works 1891" Webb signs big and bold. Verso of this print bears an oval inkstamp of the L. & N.W.R. Mechanical Engineer's Office dated 30 September 1893. A superb and significant piece ideal for display. unknown

36435This long-term Republican representative from U.S. Grant's adoptive hometown of Galena Illinois served this district in Northwestern Illinois for fourteen terms 1933-61. Partly-printed DS 1p 8½" X 11" Jo Daviess County IL 1926 October 15. Very good. Faint age toning. "Declaration of Intention" document issued by the U.S. Department of Labor Naturalization Service for one Andrew Boeckl a 24-year-old marble worker from Bavaria Germany who had arrived in New York in 1924. Most interesting is the printed text noting that "It is my bona fide intention to renounce forever all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign prince potentate state or sovereignty and particularly to The German Reich" these last three words inked in -- but better yet is the following printed text: "I am not an anarchist; I am not a polygamist nor a believer in the practice of polygamy." Entirely filled out in Allen's attractive hand in black ink and at lower right as clerk of the circuit court he signs boldly. A delightful provocative period piece reminiscent of the oaths of allegiance signed by Confederate soldiers at the close of the Civil War. The Third Reich and anarchy statements are classic 1920s with fascism encroaching upon Europe and anarchists such as Emma Goldman and Alexander Berkman capturing the headlines. The polygamy content seems a bit less obvious no waves of anti-polygamy sentiment sweeping the country but simply represents a typical post-World War One reaction against extremism of any sort. unknown

Partly-printed TDS 1p 9¼" X 3" Hollywood CA 1936 August 8. Near fine. Pale orange check drawn on the California Bank typed out to "CASH" in the amount of $150.00 and boldly signed in black ink by Ameche. Normal bank perforation cancellations not touching signature. An attractive piece from quite early in Ameche's career -- his film debut had only occurred the previous year. It wasn't until 1939 that his most famous role as Alexander Graham Bell would make him a household name -- and actually make the name "ameche" synonymous with the telephone as in "You're wanted on the ameche!" Accompanied by an 8½" X 11" reproduction of an early head-and-shoulders caricature of a smiling young Ameche. unknown

Notes receipt of two "Common Tents" two sets of "Common Tent Poles" and five sets of "Common Tent Pins" noting their condition as "Serviceable" and "New." Penned just four weeks after the Battle of Little Big Horn and from the military post where Sitting Bull would later be kept. Scarce and unusual. unknown

Check drawn on the First Security Bank in Kirkwood on pale blue stock filled out and signed entirely in Clemens' large bold hand in black fineline made out to John Dos Passos in the amount of five dollars. Usual red inkstamped cancellation. Near fine. DOS PASSOS 1896-1970 was the prolific American novelist best known for his "U.S.A." trilogy. He boldly endorses the check on the verso in blue ballpoint. An interesting pairing of literary figures. unknown
