D. Coleridge." Arthur Duke Coleridge 1830-1913 was clerk of assizes on the Midland circuit and author of Eton in the Forties by an old Colleger 1896; and Reminiscences 1921 edited by J.A. Fuller-Maitland.<br/><br/>William Spencer 1846-1928 "Pa" was a music teacher and organist who lived at Fernlea in Cookham and was father of eight children and "was described by an acquaintance as 'a patriarchal figure who cycled around Cookham reciting Ruskin aloud'"ODNB. His eldest son William the artist of this album was a child prodigy pianist who went on to become a professor at the Bern Music Institute. William "most certainly was a draughtsman. Indeed he had to decide between a career in art or one in music and decided on music . My feeling is that both Pa and Will may have been associated with the London Bach Choir which A.D. Coleridge helped set up in 1875" Ken Pople personal communication 2006.<br/><br/>William's two younger brothers were British artists Sir Stanley Spencer 1891-1959 and Gilbert Spencer 1893-1979; all received an unconventional late Victorian education at home. Gordon Grand's first sequel to the stories in The Silver Horn published the previous year and another delightful and beloved Derrydale. The first edition was illustrated with six full-page drawings of which we offer five--what became of the other is not known. These drawings were owned by Frank Lowe and after Lowe's death were for many decades in the possession of sportsman and bibliophile Duncan Andrews . As was the case with The Silver Horn drawings these drawings done on a large scale and reduced considerably in the book are more attractive in their original larger format.<br/>The drawings included are: "Captain Walsh makes a landing with Kerry's Own"; "The black-gowned Rector his rod held firmly aloft"; "We've got to stay close to hounds or we'll lose 'em"; "The Downs-man"; and "Woodsman" an image also used as the title page vignette. In addition there are two identical sheets of proofs of these drawings reproduced in the actual size used in the book. Son of American Impressionist John Henry Twachtman J.
