A handsome album documenting missionary work in a little-known area. <br/><br/>The party almost certainly attached to the Church of Scotland Mission evidently enjoyed their time in Africa as they proceeded from Tanganyika into Central Africa. Among the photographs are shots of a native witch doctor women preparing food native sports including pillow fighting as well as topographical images. The also found time to hunt and thirteen pages are dedicated to big game. There are images of eland lion leopard elephants koodoo bushbuck hippopotamus zebra reedbuck porcupine sable wild boar buffalo hartebeeste and wildebeeste. <br/><br/>Lastly there is a photo of the Zomba Church belonging to the Church of Scotland Mission and one of the Blantyre Church which was completed in 1891. Inspired by the example of David Livingstone the Church of Scotland decided to establish a mission in Malawi in the mid-1870s. The portraits include Stubbs' 'Godolphin Arabian' and a vast stable of paintings by Herring Senior racing scenes and other works.<br /> "The twenty-one copy edition of Cherished Portraits of Thoroughbred Horses is one of the rarest works of its kind in America. . It was Connett's most amibitious project and if produced today would easily cost several thousand dollars per copy" Siegel p. 174.<br /> <br /> Unique survival of the production process for one of the great American sporting books of the interwar years and a testament to Woodward's close involvement with the book. A rare and engaging account of a hunting trip to northwest Canada in the summer of 1910. Ohioans Arthur Bannon and his companion James Blair went in over the White Pass and Yukon Railway down the Lewis to Selkirk at the beginning of the Yukon proper up the Pelly River to the mouth of the Macmillan and up that river to country about 275 miles east of Selkirk. They hunted mountain sheep black bears grizzlies caribou moose and more assisted by a cook and guide named Grant Jennings a veteran of the Klondike Gold Rush of 1898. Â Bannon relates their hunting experiences and also describes their travels the scenery and the history of the region.<br/>"A superb hunting narrative" - Midland Notes.<br/>"This is a plain straightforward and most interesting account of a hunting trip mainly for mountain sheep in Yukon Territory.Bannon gives a good picture of the country through which he passed and his hunting experiences are quite absorbing" - Streeter. Weaver Dallas engineer & "machinery man"; J.F. McDonough Murray Manufacturing Dallas; R.H. Nevitt trusted lieutenant of McDonough. The guest Platt B. Walker was a Minneapolis lumberman and businessman. The party travelled by rail from Houston to Victoria and thence by wagon and pony towards the coast to the lands of the "Rathbone Sporting Club". This was the fourth annual outing of the club formed by Capt. Harry Rathbone Bonner Weaver Fry and friends including Henry Crawford and Billy Lanier who were already at the tent camp. They hunted deer prairie chicken duck and geese with incidental forays after squirrel and fishing for crab for the pot.<br/>The seventh member of the club Joe Johnson southwestern representative of Westinghouse joined the party for a time. They met with rancher T.P. Traynor and one of the duck shoots occurred at his pond; the goose hunt took place at Green Lake.<br/>Lanier was official toddy maker and all told stories of alligators stampedes and other matters.Weaver was official photographer and one of the plates captures the author Walker among the camp tents with Spanish moss hanging in heavy clusters from the trees.
