Ball's Illustrations for 'The Compleat Angler' 1935-36. Outstanding maquette of original drawings by Robert Ball 1890-1975 for the Heritage Press edition of the Compleat Angler by Walton & Cotton. As the first title page designs indicate the edition was planned for 1935 and a printed title page dated 1935 has been tipped in but the book did not appear until 1936 Coigney 324.

Robert Ball illustrated numerous sporting books during the 1930s including several for the Derrydale Press: Pteryplegia 1931 John Peel 1932 and The Warwick Woodlands 1934 each in a historical style sympathetic to the individiual work. His designs for The Compleat Angler honor the fashion of the mid-seventeenth century and yet the details are distinctively Ball's own. His drawings of natural scenes fish birds and animals are finely detailed and lively. The illustrations inlcude vignettes and page layouts as well as more elaborate full page drawings. TOGETHER WITH BARBER'S ORIGINAL INK DRAWING FOR THE TITLE PAGE laid in. 1 vols. 4to. "One of the most important books published by Connett." -- Siegel This is the large paper edition of this work. The regular trade edition was published at the same time by Windward House a sporting press started by Connett in 1933. Both editions used Barber's vignette on the the title page. From this drawing it appears that Connett liked the artist's Windward design and used in it the Derrydale edition: in the margin of the drawing Connett has pencilled "reduce 1/4 inch" and the drawing was photographically reduced to the smaller dimension for the large paper copies. A simplified version of the design was used on the Derrydale edition spine. One of the rarest and most desirable productions of the Derrydale Press and by virtue of the drawing a unique copy. Rare privately-printed account of a month-long fishing and hunting expedition through Wyoming in the early fall of 1920. The text relates the experiences of two couples Ralph and Myra and Philip and Caroline on a hunting and fishing expedition particularly in pursuit of elk and sheep. Their guides are identified as Ned Frost "the sine qua non of the whole excursion" and Carl Hammett. In the foreword the unnamed author offers useful advice for making such a trip successful and comfortable recommending clothing footwear and camping material: "There are many sleeping outfits that are fairly satisfactory but of those who have come under my observation the best combination is an air mattress with bellows to blow it up and on top of it an eider down 'Arctic Sleeping Bag' with a Hudson Bay blanket inside to wrap closely around you. With this outfit you can 'sleep warm' and comfortably no matter what the temperature may be - and 'sleeping warm' is one of the secrets of a successful hunting trip." The text consists of daily entries from their September 20 departure by train from Chicago to their return a month later with outstanding descriptions of the scenery and natural wonders of Wyoming the results of their hunting and fishing adventures and how each of the four city-dwellers performed in the wild. A few of the entries are written by the women who participated.
Â
In the September 30 entry Ralph describes the scenery at their lunch stop: "Behind us were the Big Horns - 175 miles away but looking infinitely nearer in that wonderfully clear air: in front of us were the Tetons and to their right some 65 miles distant Ned pointed out to us a peak a landmark in the Yellowstone-Thorofare country at the foot of which Burnham missed his elk so many times five years ago. A vast country of mountain and valley; of forest and barren wastes; of gentle slopes and of box canyons whose rocky sides descended sheer for hundreds of feet until they ended at the bottom in a jumble of rocks and browken bowlders sic."
Â
OCLC suggests that this work was printed by the noted Chicago author printer and publisher Ralph Fletcher Seymour and likely written by him as well. 1891181602London: Longman Green and Co. 1891-1902. The standard authority on late Victorian leisure A smartly presented set of the full series including the additional Motors and Motor Driving volume. Conceived as the first comprehensive encyclopaedia of pastimes enjoyed by the modern British gentleman and gentlewoman the highly successful Badminton Library took its name from the estate of the Duke of Beaufort who edited the series. Various other peers contributed volumes such as Lord Walsingham who authored Shooting and the Earl of Suffolk who wrote Racing and Steeplechasing. The first volume Hunting 1885 was dedicated to the Prince of Wales. These upper-class credentials were integral to the original conception of the series but it was assumed that the Duke of Beaufort's contribution "would be purely nominal" Campbell p. 128. As it was the 8th Duke was an enthusiastic and highly active participant in the project. 30 vols octavo 180 x 130 mm. Copiously illustrated with plates some coloured illustrations in text. Privately printed Christmas greeting from Zane Grey recounting how he and his brother came to fish at Long Key and many of the characters he encountered.

The book was issued in a very small edition reprinting an article first published in the Izaak Walton League Monthly. William Dilg was a friend and correspondent of Zane Grey who founded the Izaak Walton League in 1922 as a conservation and angling group. Within the space of four years and with the support of Zane Grey Emerson Hough Stewart Edward White and other writers Dilg had built it into an influential nationwide organization with more than 200000 members and some 2500 local chapters. In 1926 DIlg was ousted as president of the league amid some controversy. The Forest and Stream issue for June 1926 reports on the controversy and bears the headline "ZANE GREY Declares for WILL H. DILG" and includes an open letter from Grey stating that he had resigned from the League and giving his reasons for a call to resist the commercial interests that displaced Dilg who served as League president and as editor of the monthly Magazine.

A four-page Typed Letter signed Bill" from Dilg to Zane Grey dated 2 August 1926 restates Dilg's complaint about the actions of the "Junta" and proposes a plan for action by Grey in support of Dilg and the interests of the league's members. The organization Dilg founded still exists and pursues conservation initiatives.

The Bonefish Brigade is RARE and the present copy is inscribed by the editor who founded the Izaak Walton League and commissioned the piece with a notable letter pleading for Grey's support.
