Roosevelt pictured seated in the center of the porch the Groton Football team of which Gordon was the Captain and left tackle photo of Coaches and Captains of the Annual St. Marks-Groton Game November 1934 action images from football games and the Yale Freshmen Glee Club-1936.<br/><br/>Gordon Auchincloss 1886-1943 was born in New York and was the son of Edgar Stirling and Maria LaGrange Sloan Auchincloss. His grandfather Samuel Sloan was president of the Delaware Lackawanna & Western Railroad and the Hudson River Railroad predecessor of the New York Central System. Auchincloss graduated from Groton School in 1904. He received an A.B. degree from Yale University in 1908 and an LL. B. degree from Harvard Law School in 1911. He married Janet House on September 14 1912. <br/><br/>Auchincloss served as assistant United States attorney for the Southern District New York and as special assistant to the Attorney General of the United States. He was a member of the law firm of Auchincloss Alley & Duncan and served as secretary of the American War Mission to England and France in November 1917 and as secretary to his father-in-law Colonel Edward M. House during negotiations of the Armistice in November 1918 and during the Paris Peace Conference in 1919. In addition to Chase National Bank he was a director of International Paper and Power Company the Crosse & Blackwell Company societe Financiere de Transports et d'Enterprises Industrielles of Brussels Belgium; Solvay American Corporation and Compania Hispano Americana de Electicidad of Barcelona Spain.He was assistant treasurer of the Democratic National Committee in 1916 chairman of the fund raising committee of the New York Association for the Blind a trustee of the Riverside Church a member of the State and city bar associations and Psi Upsilon and Scroll and Key of Yale. Along the top are a series of figures showing the "Preparatory Movements" or postures beneath is a large circular "target" with the directions of the seven cuts and guards together with the words of command for the Infantry Sword Exercise. The figures are by John Augustus Atkinson who was noted for his "spirited and lifelike" figure-drawing; "His figures artistically arrested in movement show rather an actor's sensibility than a draughtsman's skill. " DNB Here he shows a range of contemporary infantry uniforms including the Rifle Brigade and a Highlander. <br/>Angelo's Fencing Academy was established in 1759 by Domenico Angelo Malevolti Tremamondo who had first established himself in London as a riding master. Angelo as he became known set up a highly fashionable "école d'escrime" in Soho which enjoyed the patronage of the Prince of Wales and the Duke of Devonshire. Such was his perceived authority in the area of the art of the fence that the plates of his L'École d'Armes were reproduced in the Encyclopédie illustrative of the section on "Escrime." Angelo's eldest son Henry who had put the final polish on his fencing skills studying in Paris under Motet became virtual head of his father's académie around 1785 and continued its reputation as "not only a school-of-arms but as a school of deportment as well" Aylward The House of Angelo p. 38. In turn Henry's son also named Henry inherited the business when his father "retired from ther active conduct of the school" in 1817 DNB.<br/>The present item is dedicated "To Field Marshal His Royal Highness The Duke of York. by Henry Angelo Junr." who we must presume to be the latter Henry despite the dating to 1816. At this stage in the history of the House of Angelo it was probably unnecessary for him to seek patronage with a well-placed dedication and in 1833 he was appointed Superintendent of Sword Exercise in the Army. However it does appears that this was based entirely on personal merit his method being such that "even the soldiers themselves are anxious to learn it" Aylward p. 190. <br/>A wonderful survival of the Angelo dynasty a school-of-arms that became "in the end nothing less than a British Institution" ibid. p. 183. The drawing depicts an allegorical figure of Manhattan in colonial garb tipping his hat and bowing in homage to his neighbor across the Brooklyn Bridge: a rotund figure in a Brooklyn baseball uniform bat in one hand pennant in the other standing in a field with "Brooklyn B.B. Club" on fence.<br/>The Dodgers were called the Robins from 1914-1931 in honor of their Manager Wilbert Robinson who is called Uncle Wilbert by the press.<br/>1916: The Brooklyn Robins win their first NL Pennant in 16 years with a 94-60 record and earn a trip to their first ever World Series. After dropping Game 1 to the Boston Red Sox at home the Robins would score in the first inning of Game 2 and would not manage to not score again in the 14 inning pitching duel. The Robins just could not figure out how to hit a young 21-year old pitcher by the name of Babe Ruth who pitched the entire 14 innings to give the Red Sox a 2-0 series lead. The Robins would bounce back to take Game 3 in Boston but the Red Sox would take the next 2 and the series 4 games to 1.<br/>A charming cartoon by the well-known sports artist Robert Edgren. unknown books
