A picture of this book is available upon request by email. An important book by one of the great botanical explorers and naturalists of the nineteenth century, the Italian botanist, spent time at Kew, where he met Charles Darwin, William Joseph Hooker and James Brooke, the Rajah of Sarawak. The latter lead him to spending 3 years from 1865 to 1868 undertaking research in Sarawak, Brunei and other islands off present-day Malaysia and New Guinea, where he discovered many new species of palms, and many other plants such as a phosphorescent fungus that was bright enough to read a newspaper placed by it. Beccari was in Sarawak during 1865-67 where he collected over 800 bird skins including 40 not previously discovered of unrecorded species. He describes nature, the people, Dyaks and their customs in some detail, prior to the major impacts of the twentieth century, and describes his return to Sarawak some 20 years later, where he formed a botanical garden. He discovered the titan arum, the plant with the largest unbranched inflorescence in the world, in Sumatra in 1878. This edition also contains the valuable and detailed appendix on the forests of Borneo, which are currently being logged to extinction. The preface is by naturalist F. H. H. Guillemard who also wrote a book of his travels in the area. The later reprint does not include the maps of the original.

1928AMO-3025Exceptionnelle photographie argentique en tirage d'époque (1928) d'un gorille solitaire mis en scène par le chasseur et son guide de chasse. Photographie très grand format 40 X 30 cm encadrée (cadre 52 x 42 cm). Cadre en bois massif. Verso plaqué de bois. Ficelle d'attache d'époque (fragile). La photo a été retouchée à l'époque par un professionnel pour obtenir un superbe cliché souvenir pour le chasseur. Une photographie de petite taille (11,5 x 8,5 cm) est jointe à la grande photo et est légendée au verso : Lac Zonangui 11 décembre 1928 - Gorille solitaire - Les points que l'on voit au dessous de la mâchoire sont les trous des chevrotines. [ajouté au crayon : tué au Gabon Congo]. Grâce à ces précieuses informations nous pouvons localiser avec précision la présence de ce grand gorille solitaire. Les abords du lac Zonangui est une région du bas Ogooué. Le fleuve OGOOUÉ (900 km), est le fleuve majeur du Gabon, qui après être parti des PLATEAUX BATÉKÉ dans la province du Haut-Ogooué (Congo), et avoir reçu des affluents, dont le principal est l'IVINDO, va se jeter dans l'Océan Atlantique, à PORT-GENTIL, après avoir traversé tout le GABON. C'est l'épine dorsale du pays. Le fleuve, au sud de la ville s'étend en deux parties principales et une multitude de petites ramifications. Son écoulement est constellé de lacs immenses (dont le lac Zonangui), qui s'étendent sur les rives droite et gauche du fleuve. La forêt tropicale gabonaise abrite encore aujourd'hui l'une des plus importantes populations de grands singes. C'est l'exploitation forestière qui aujourd'hui en danger les gorilles et autres animaux. La chasse des grands singes se pratique encore par les villageois. Le braconnage existe aussi malheureusement encore. Précieux document iconographique témoin d'une époque où la chasse aux grands animaux (fauves, gorilles, éléphants, etc) était autorisée et pratiquée par de nombreux riches européens. Cet agrandissement de qualité a probablement été fait pour le chasseur lui-même et son entourage. Sans doute existe-t-il dans cette seule épreuve (tout au plus quelques unes). Document des plus rares de cette qualité. En aucune façon ce document ne se veut une apologie de la chasse en Afrique des animaux sauvages, il est proposé comme un document historique tenant lieu de mémoire.
