First edition of this nicely executed jigsaw puzzle automobile safety advertisement touting the 1920’s innovations by the U.S. Rubber Co. tires with this one featuring “Cog Wheel Traction and tempered rubber to ensure traction in rainy driving conditions. The puzzle depicts a boy and overturned wagon at an intersection underneath the bumper of a 1920’s sedan being admonished by a dapperly dressed driver. U.S. Rubber Co. one of the original 12 stocks listed on the Dow Jones originally produced rubber gloves and rubber footwear and by the 1920’s were producing automobile tires. They later purchased Gillette Safety Tire Co. and are now known as the Uniroyal brand. Clifton 1892-1957 began as chauffeur for the Venice CA police department before World War I and later owned a popular service station with Marshall 1894-1974 until the Great Depression when he went to work as landscaper for a movie studio while Marshall would become an automotive parts store owner. Some time in the early 1930’s after the Federal Government had adopted a gasoline tax similar to Oregon’s pioneering move required driver’s license applicants to pass vision and road rules tests and registration fee the City of Portland began requiring twice-yearly inspections for vehicles. Reproductions can be obtained for the first three stickers 1938-1939 but the final four are relatively unknown. These Hupmobiles were attractive comfortable and reliable and renowned for their rounded lines sloping frilles headlights that flared in the fenders and the split “Sea Gull†front bumpers. The 1935 featured new “Mouse Ear†vents on the hood sides and a mesh grille. Unfortunately the popularity of the styles attracted a hostile takeover of the company and after fending off the attempt and unable to secure a Federal Reserve Loan the company ceased production in late Dec. 1935. Early printing of this four sheet map depicting the automobile roads connecting Canada and the United States during the 1920’s as the Good Roads Movement rapidly expanded through the Northern Country following World War I. These maps depict the burgeoning highway and national road system which had been fostered by urban centers attempting to convince rural municipalities to replace their seasonal dirt roads with those of gravel or crushed stone and facilitate much greater movement of agricultural and manufacturing products across the continent and with the U.S. The Atlantic map stretches from the maritime provinces down to Washington D.C. and over to Niagara Falls and Buffalo NY; The Middle West map documents the main automobile roads and highways from Port Albert to Port Arthur and South from Denver to St. Louis indicating provincial federal and state roads and highways; The Great Lakes section tracks the extensive network of roads and highways surrounding the Great Lakes including those in Iowa Kentucky Wisconsin New York and the Canadian provinces of Quebec and Ontario; while the Pacific Map records the highways from San Francisco to Denver and up through Alberta and over to British Columbia.
