The milestone cookbook from the first principal of the Boston Cooking School and a student of Maria Parloa. According to the preface the work was "undertaken at the urgent request of the pupils of the Boston Cooking School who have desired that the receipts and lessons given during the last four years in that institution should be arranged in a permanent form." This work is considered one of the first American cookbooks to provide scientific information about cooking and nutrition and helped set the pattern of rational organization for cookbooks to come. Lincoln was also the teacher of Fannie Farmer. Spine a bit cocked but clean throughout. Near very good but for bit of edgewear to the paper-covered boards over brown cloth. Pale embossed paper mount is 4 x 2 1/2 inches with 1 3/8 x 1 1/8 inch oval photograph a bust of a bearded Lincoln. Very good light soil to the mount with the photo contour partially cut through from being pressed into the paper mount. The embossed design features an eagle laurel leaves flags shield and cannons. The photo is in excellent condition the President's gaze clear and sharp. Free of the toning often seen on this cdv. unknown

This particular copy has the ownership inscription of Joshua Fry Speed. Speed was Abraham Lincoln’s four-year roommate and close lifelong friend. The 2024 documentary film Lover of Men suggests that Lincoln and Speed had a gay relationship. For much of his life Speed was a lawyer in Louisville and from 1848-1850 he was a Representative in the Kentucky House of Representatives. Provenance: From the great-great-grandson of Edward Dorsey Hobbs who was Joshua Speed’s brother-in-law. One of Hobbs’ slaves married one of Speed’s slaves. Hobbs’ grandchild was taught to swim by one of Speed’s freed slaves.</p> Gould and Lincoln hardcover

The first American edition was published in 1833 under the title Lectures to Young Ladies. The second American edition was published in New York in the same year as The Female Student. . Original black morocco stamped elaborately in gilt gilt-spine all edges gilt yellow coated endpapers. . Small octavo. Binding extremities lightly rubbed minor bump to front board crown of spine neatly repaired. Hinges a bit cracked but holding. The occasional minor smudge or stain. A very good copy of a rare book. Almira Hart Lincoln Phelps 1793-1884 was an American educator author editor younger sister of women's rights activist Emma Hart Willard 1787-1870 and a teacher and vice-principal at Troy Female Seminary in New York. Phelps was devoted to raising the academic standards of education for girls. She published several popular science textbooks in the fields of botany chemistry and geology. Her interest in botany was fostered by Amos Eaton 1776-1842 and while at Troy Female Seminary she wrote her first and best-known textbook Familiar Lectures on Botany 1829. Phelps eventually became the principal of Patapsco Female Institute in Maryland and created its high academic standards with a curriculum that included natural history the sciences and mathematics. The curriculum was designed specifically to train highly qualified teachers; the "polite attainments" that were the typical hallmarks of female education were not excluded though they were considered to be of secondary importance. In 1859 Phelps became the second woman elected to the American Association for the Advancement of Science following Maria Mitchell. The Female Student an "intellectual manual for young ladies" p. iv has been divided by Phelps into five parts: I. Preliminary Views on Education II. Physical Education III. Intellectual Cultivation IV. Accomplishments V. Moral and Religious Education and VI. The Profession of Teaching. Printed for Scott, Webster, and Geary unknown

A "Natural Philosophy" or Physics textbook written by Almira Hart Lincoln Phelps a prominent American scientist educator and author. Phelps was the younger sister of Emma Willard to whom this book is dedicated and a teacher at Troy Female Seminary in New York. She was dedicated to the education of young women and influenced other women to become botanists; "Between 1828 and 1837 Phelps established herself as a reputable publisher by publishing 10 textbooks most focusing on botany and the education of young women. Her books such as Familiar Lectures on Botany received praise as excellent educational tools for women. These books became the standard textbooks across the United States and Canada selling over 3500 copies" Maryland Women's Hall of Fame.
