This copy owned signed and dated by Civil War Assistant Paymaster William Henry Hathorne. Hathorne served in the U.S. Navy on the Cincinnati and the Silver Cloud. Interesting date of April 10 1865 in Hathorne's hand as well the date of Robert E. Lee's final address to Confederate troops after his surrender at Appomattix. Smith Kirkpatrick was a famed professor of writing at UF who apparently stayed in trouble with the leadership over his unorthodox methods of teaching. I would assume that Smith and Harry hit it off early based on this. Smith and Andrew Lytle recognized the promise of Harry Crews early in his tenure at UF. Crews often stated that he only attended college after his time at war as it was a way of using his GI Bill to write full-time while the government paid him to go to school. Crews' work suffered from his hard living and hard drinking but his gift as a writer could not be subdued in it's entirety. Smith was an early supporter friend mentor and shrink. "I don't know if I would have written anything I wrote if it wasn't for his patience his kindness" Crews once said of Smith Kirkpatrick. <br /> <br /> Harry Crews was undoubtedly the "amped up" successor to William Faulkner Flannery O'Connor and the Southern Gothic movement of the mid-20th century. He was violent man who led a violent life and his violence reflects on the page. Crews did not just write about bloody bar brawls in Macon County he lived them. Of his own admission Crews drank "hard" for over thirty years. All the while he was writing during the night a habit he and Hunter Thompson shared. While he is remembered for "The Gospel Singer" and "A Feast of Snakes" I personally love his short stories about life in the swamps of Florida. ONE OF THE FINEST ASSOCIATION COPIES WOULD COULD EXPECT TO FIND IN MY OPINION. First printing with complete number line to the "1" on the copyright page. Original price of $17.95 intact. Other letters from 23 Clarges Street London; Brighton; Abbey Hill Winchester; and Imberhorne Manor East Grinstead Sussex. Fifteen items of correspondence including eleven autograph letters from Stonor himself eight signed 'Edmund Stonor' the other three ' Edmund Stonor Abp of Trebizond'. The collection aged and worn with fraying to edges. The items attached with a brass stud. Regarding the two recipients prominent solicitors serving the Irish and Roman Catholic interests in London Philip Witham 1843-1921 - whose firm was Roskell Witham Munster and Weld - appears to have succeed F. R. Ward at 1 Gray's Inn Square. The main topic of the correspondence is the drafting in 1888 of Stonor's will. Other topics include: an allowance to a family member and a request for information about a London solicitor visiting Rome. The other four items in the collection are: ALS to Stonor from Ward; carbon copy of ALS to Stonor from Witham; two ALsS to Witham from the judge Henry James Stonor 1820-1908; Who Was Who in one of which 21 June 1896 he discusses the Bishop's role as 'a kind of "Chargé d'affaires" for all the English Catholics Lays & secular & then friends' for whom he 'does all he can' considering that 'he ought to be assisted'. 14750'Bangor Wales Decr. 1886.'. The lecture which is unpublished is an interesting personal statement by a neglected Victorian painter who died tragically young. A rather impressive example of his work in Turneresque style titled 'The Heart of the Hills' is in the Maidstone Museum. The lecture is 30pp. 8vo in a ruled notebook with embossed black wraps. In good condition on aged paper with some wear and discoloration. Ownership inscription of 'W. G. Shrubsole Bangor Decr. 1886' inside the front wrap. The first page is headed 'The Ideal in Art. by W. G. Shrubsole Dec. 1886.' Following the lecture is a later note by Shrubsole stating 'This lecture was delivered at Bangor N. Wales in Dec. 1886 in connection with the Menai Society of Science and Literature. W.G.S.' The text carries a number of deletions and emendations. Shrubsole begins by asking his audience to make allowance for the 'difficulties besetting this treatment' of his 'vast subject' 'owing to the complexity of the various considerations involved which renders brevity the greatest difficulty to be encountered in such an undertaking'. His aim has been 'to direct attention and to induce reflection rather than to be didactic but if I have failed to imbue this discourse with that character - if I appear somewhat dogmatic here and there my apology must be that my dogmatism is the result of earnest conviction that the subject of Art is one on which I feel deeply - one which I have more practical knowledge of than of any other and one to which I have from childhood given the most earnest and unremitting attention endeavoured to grasp the principles of and the relation of those principles to the other emerging streams of knowledge and thought which commingling form and feed the fount of higher life. The vital importance of Art as a tributary to the higher-life is yet to be recognized in this country; the few spasmodic attempts made hitherto have failed to pierce the adamantine husk of ignorance and indifference which enshrouds the subject in the minds of those towards whom we turn in vain'. Loosely inserted in the notebook is a pen drawing on 17.5 x 12.5cm paper titled 'W. E. Bacon Sept 10th. 1880' and signed 'W. G. Shrubsole'. It shows the head and shoulders of a bearded man smoking a pipe in artist's broad-brimmed hat buttoned coat and muffler. On the reverse is a pencil sketch of a street of Tudor buildings. Another loosely-inserted item is a 'Synopsis' 1p. 12mo in Shrubsole's hand under the headings 'Colour faculty comparatively modern' and 'Colour as a physical Science'. A third loosely inserted item is a cutting of a magazine article by Shrubsole under his initials 'W. G. S.' titled 'KITTLES' and concerning his pet cat. 'Bangor [Wales] Decr. 1886.' paperback
