Ali Suat Hayri Ürgüplü was a Turkish politician. He served a brief term as Prime Minister of Turkey in 1965. He was also the last Prime Minister to be born outside the territory of present-day Turkey, being born in Damascus, which was then part of the Ottoman Empire. Ürgüplü graduated from Galatasaray High School. He was the descendant of a distinguished line of Ottoman religious scholars and administrators. His father was the celebrated Sheikh ul-Islam Ürgüplü Hayri Efendi, minister of religious affairs under the Committee of Union and Progress (or Young Turk) regime of 1913-1918. After a brief career as a judge, Ürgüplü entered the Parliament in 1939 and served as Minister of Customs and Public Monopolies in the Sükrü Saracoglu cabinet in 1947-1948. He returned to the senate of Parliament in 1961 and was its chairman November 27, 1963 - November 6, 1963. Ürgüplü was asked to form a non-partisan caretaker cabinet after the collapse of Premier Ismet Inönü's coalition government in 1965. The cabinet was formed on 5 February, and served until the parliamentary elections of 10 October, although it never received a vote of confidence in Parliament. Ürgüplü continued to serve in the senate until 1972. He died on 27 December 1981 in Istanbul and was interred at the Edirnekapi Marty's Cemetary. (Source: Wikipedia).

Byzantine manuscripts in Bucharest's collections.= Manuscrise bizantine în colectii bucurestene. Project coordinator: Ileana Stanculescu. From the first article: "From the photographs taken over time, we chose those which best capture a special artistic quality with their strictly documentary value. This selection of manuscripts ends before the dawn of the 16th century, given the common view that after the fall of Constantinople (1453) we can no longer speak of a truly Byzantine culture, but only of a Byzantine style, albeit one which continued to shine. The selection of images was also intended to emphasize not only the aesthetics of the illuminated folios, but also those details that are significant for the codices as a whole, things which would dryly translate today as typeface font type, page layout and binding. Far from the sight of all interested parties, the Byzantine manuscripts in the Bucharest repositories are still full of mysteries waiting to be discovered and explained by researchers. We present these images here to provide a platform for a wider discussion of the significance of the Byzantine legacy for Romanian pre-modern culture. For the identification and description of the items chosen we used several catalogues, either manuscript or in print, which we then compared with the corresponding labels used by the repositories. The bibliography at the end of the volume indicates the various catalogues used for each collection. We found a wealth of details pertaining to the manuscript collections of the Romanian Patriarchy in the album published by the archimandrite Policarp. This is an excellent occasion to thank the specialists involved in the inventory of the collection for the additional information they supplied. We extend our warmest gratitude to them. Here and there we updated and corrected the information found in the aforementioned sources in the light of recent research: the dating of ms. sl. II 280, from the Library of the Holy Synod of the Romanian Orthodox Church at the Antim Monastery. We thank Mrs Tatiana Popova (University of St. Petersburg in Severodvinsk), for the observation that we are dealing with a direct copy, made at the end of the 14th century, of the Russian metropolitan Kyprian's reworking (dated 1385) of the Ladder of John Climax. Ms. sl. II 280 belongs to a group of manuscripts kept at Antim Monastery, but originates from a collection in Slava Rusa, a settlement in Dobrogea and a known...".

Folio (433 x 280 mm). 17 ff. Coloured ink on coloured paper. Contemp. half cloth with gilt-stamped spine title. Highly original and exceptionally colourful manuscript in elegant calligraphy, written in inks of various colours (mainly white, blue, red, and green) on glossy and silk paper in alternating colours. The writing is surrounded by elaborate calligrams showing birds and penwork. The text itself consists mainly of descriptions of various kinds of birds (such as the magpie, quail, pheasant, peacock, jay, and swallow), but also includes bits on bears and hedgehogs; another page offers two capital blackletter alphabets instead. The calligrapher has succeeded in marrying content, script, and image, achieving a unique and impressive synthesis, undoubtedly penned with a feather quill. - Binding insignificantly rubbed; extremeties bumped. The delicate pages show occasional slight signs of wrinkled; the silk papers are browned. Several pages show ink bleeding or offsetting on the reverse.
