Prior to this Sansovino also worked on the satires of Ariosto 14741533 separately published.<br>Â Â Â Â The text is divided into sections by author each of whom the editor introduces with a brief biography. A short abstract printed in roman precedes each poem printed in italic. Fine woodcut head- and tailpieces and a variety of initials in historiated patterned and factotum designs decorate the text; and the title-page features the woodcut printers' device of Truth personified flanked by an eagle a lion a bull and an angel representing the Four Evangelists.<br>Â Â Â Â Provenance: Ownership inscription on front fly-leaf of Luigi Pagani Cesa possibly the Italian jurist born at Belluno in 1855 who served as a member of Parliament for 190413; and the words "penso che" "I think that . . ." written above in an earlier hand <br>Â Â Â Â <br>Â Â Â Â Adams A1691; CNCE 2806. He is best known as the author of the romance epic Orlando Furioso 1516-1532. The poem a continuation of Matteo Maria Boiardo's Orlando Innamorato describes the adventures of Charlemagne Orlando and the Franks as they battle against the Saracens with diversions into many side plots. The poem is transformed into a satire of the chivalric tradition. Ariosto composed the poem in the ottava rima rhyme scheme and introduced narrative commentary throughout the work.<br /> <p>Ariosto also coined the term 'humanism' for choosing to focus upon the strengths and potential of humanity rather than only upon its role as subordinate to God. This led to Renaissance humanism.</p> <br /> The story is a chivalric romance which stemmed from a tradition beginning in the Late Middle Ages and continuing in popularity in the 16th century and well into the 17th.<br /> <p>Orlando is the Christian knight known in French and English as Roland. The story takes place against the background of the war between Charlemagne's Christian paladins and the Saracen army that has invaded Europe and is attempting to overthrow the Christian empire.<br /> <br /> CONDITION REPORT: Very Good or better.<br /> <br /> Exterior and binding; firm hinges and joints tight pages slight bowing of boards sharp corners. Mostly light and scattered foxing heaviest near engravings and at text block extremities. Evidence of handling: bent corners creasing an occasional smudge. Gioberti 1801-1852 was an Italian Catholic priest philosopher and politician serving as Sardinia's prime minister in 1848-9. This is the third Le Monnier edition the first appearing in 1846. 2 vols small octavo 175 x 108 mm.
