In roughly contemporary tree-calf marbled leather over pasteboard gold garlanded borders made with a roller tool. Spines decorated in gold with stars within roundels. Recent black leather title labels. Volume labels not present. Spine ends worn with fissure visible along spine of volume IV. Light wear to edges. Scattered foxing. Tender joints reinforced with Japanese paper. Ownership inscription on front blank. <br /><br />The19th-century literary historian Henry Hallam called Ariosto "Europe's second-favorite poet after Homer." Indeed there was an appetite for a modern English translation to replace the Elizabethan version by John Harington. John Hoole assumed the enormous task and produced this very popular version in rhymed couplets with extensive annotation and a biographical essay. The publication is notable for the commission in volume three of a frontispiece plate engraved by William Blake as well as for plates after Angelica Kauffman Gertrud Metz and William Hamilton. 36547Venice: Felice Valgrisi ca. 16th century. Very Good. Three leaves from what has been identified as a 16th century Italian edition of Orlando Furioso. The research of the former owner of the leaves led him to believe that the pages are from an edition printed by Felice Valgrisi in 1574. However further research does not show Valgrisi printing Orlando Furioso before the 1580s and that he only began his printing career in 1574. The leaves are for pages 369-370 and 391-394. The pages include decorated initials Two of the pages have an opening "argomento" - subject - with a pictorial border. There is also a full-page illustration. The leaves pages show aging and the top and bottom margins and right fore-edges are browned. Still very good examples of fine sixteenth century printing. Measures 7 x 10 inches. EPHEM/042423.
