br. Si tratta del primo studio monografico - in lingua inglese - sulla lirica amorosa in volgare di Ariosto da quest'ultimo coltivata in parallelo alle opere maggiori. L'indagine porta alla luce l'intenso dialogo stilistico che Ariosto intrattiene sia con le correnti poetiche coeve che con i classici e, al tempo stesso, si interroga sul ruolo giocato dalla poesia lirica nel complesso dell'opera ariostesca. Tra i temi affrontati risulta particolarmente nuovo rispetto alla sua applicazione all'Ariosto, quello del self-fashioning della costruzione identitaria cioè, secondo la definizione di Stephen Greenblatt che applica il concetto proprio alla società rinascimentale e in modo particolare al mondo della corte. L'opera lirica amorosa di Ludovico Ariosto viene dunque inquadrata nel suo contesto culturale e sociale e diventa un valido supporto per l'interpretazione dell'opera maggiore rispetto al costume, alla figura femminile e anche all'etica delle emozioni.
