HANDSOME EARLY 20TH CENTURY RED MOROCCO GILT BY MATTHEWS stamp-signed on front turn-in covers with gilt French fillet border enclosing a simple lobed panel raised bands spines very attractively gilt in compartments with spiral cornerpieces and centerpiece featuring either a fleur-de-lys a manuscript scroll and quill or Dibdin's cipher gilt inner dentelles marbled endpapers all edges gilt. With numerous engravings in the text and 44 ENGRAVED PLATES as called for including portraits views antiquities and manuscript facsimiles. Jackson 89; Windle & Pippin A-65; Lowndes I 641. ◆Plates with occasional minor foxing otherwise A VERY PLEASING SET IN ESPECIALLY FINE CONDITION the text clean and bright and the decorative bindings unworn and remarkably lustrous. This charming bibliographical travelogue takes us from Peterborough to London and on to Lincoln York Durham Newcastle Carlisle Dumfries Edinburgh Glasgow St. Andrews and the border lands of Sir Walter Scott with many stops along the way at libraries cathedrals castles and ruins. Dibdin 1776-1847 was perhaps the most visible figure among the bibliophiles and bibliographers of the first half of the 19th century. His "Bibliomania" 1809 was an amusing account of the then-current craze of book collecting among wealthy English aristocrats and the book while cynical did much to encourage the mania. And it was at his suggestion that the Roxburghe Club was founded in 1812. Our binding is typical of the elegant work produced by William Matthews a Scot who became the leading binder in America during the second half of the 19th century. He was head of the bindery at D. Appleton and Company was an early member of the Grolier Club and was an important advisor in the formation of the Club Bindery a firm organized with the generally realized intention of executing fine American bindings that rivalled the best being produced in Europe. Finely bound by Tout in full polished calf with triple gilt fillet richly gilt backstrip with green labels gilt turn-ins marbled endpapers all edges gilt. Vols. 1 and 3 rehinged tips bumped. Plates occasionally foxed but in general a very good copy internally with the bookplates of renowned M.D. J.A. Knowles Renshaw in each vol. and the very faded signature of Mrs Boolys July 1821 on each title-page. § First edition regular paper issue; first state of vol. 1 p. 27 and p.95 vol. 3. One of a very few books by Dibdin that went into a second edition. "The collation is very irregular by reason of the fact that all illustrations in the text being printed on India paper pasted-in are on separately inserted leaves . This Voyage Pittoresque is lavishly illustrated mainly with copperplates after drawings by G.R. Lewis and others. Dibdin says he spent over 7000 pounds on the book being the first patron to pay 100 guineas for a plate . It has been unkindly said of this book that it would have been better without any text. However it does contain a modicum of bibliographical information that is still useful if used with due caution" Jackson. Lowndes notes that it "contains much useful and curious information" on the libraries and private collections of Europe. Modern gilt-stamped green morocco marbled fore-edges; head vol. II chipped rubbed faded spine faded to natural tan some light wear to extremities. Very good. FIRST EDITION. Complete with all listed 83 steel engraved full-page plates and all listed 63 half-page steel engravings though a few miss-numbered or miss-placed. Plus with an additional full page plate facing p. 586 of vol. III titled "The Prater Vienna". Note: half-page illus. are engraved on fine India paper and mounted. Thomas Frognall Dibdin 1776-1847 born in Calcutta India English bibliographer who helped to stimulate interest in bibliography by his own enthusiastic though often inaccurate books by his share in founding the first English private publishing society and by his beautifully produced catalog of Lord Spencer's library which collection later became the nucleus of the John Rylands Library Manchester. His father the captain of a sailing ship was the inspiration for his Uncle Charles Dibdin's song "Tom Bowling." Both of Dibdin's parents died on the passage from India to England in 1780 and at age four he became the ward of his mother's younger brother Charles Compton. Educated at St. John's College Oxford Dibdin began a legal career but took holy orders in 1805. His Introduction to the knowledge of rare and valuable editions of the Greek and Latin Classics 1802 attracted the notice of Lord Spencer through whose patronage Dibdin obtained a clerical appointment in London. His Bibliotheca Spenceriana 1814–15 became famous for the high quality of its printing. Dibdin travelled widely in search of books and manuscripts and his Bibliographical Antiquarian and Picturesque Tour in France and Germany 1821 is typical of his work in containing much lively anecdote many factual errors and some excellent engravings. His Bibliomania 1809 contributed to the public's interest in old and rare books. Among his many other works is the two-volume autobiography Reminiscences of a Literary Life 1836. - Britannica W. Bound in green straight-grain morocco ruled in gilt with corner ornaments in gilt and armorial crest stamped on all boards. All edges gilt. All three volumes with mid-nineteenth-century armorial bookplate of Robert Walters along with engraved pictorial bookplate dated 1919 of Leroy Crummer MD 1872-1934 and of the American artist Robert Bruce Moyer 1913-1969. Volume II with the additional bookplate of Myrtle A. Crummer. All three volumes rebacked hinges reinforced with linen tape; joints strengthened with application of Japanese paper; edges and extremities renovated. Frequent offsetting of plates; most plates clean although some have toned to various degrees. Occasional scattered foxing. Condition generally good to very good. III restored a number of the plates foxed largely confined to the margins; a good sound set. This copy enhanced with a presentation in each volume to "B. C. Brodie Esq. from the author." With the bookplates of B. C. Brodie and B. H. Goldschmidt in each volume. Benjamin Collins Brodie was author of the classic Pathological and Surgical Observations on the Diseases of the Joints G-M 4311.
