First edition this one of 55 large paper copies; 2 volumes large 4to pp. viii 1 lxii 279 1; 6 322; volume II occasionally printed in red and with liberal use of gothic letter; engraved frontispieces in each volume double-page plan and 30 engraved plates on 29 sheets plus 6 other engravings and 71 facsimiles in the text; beautiful copy in full brown morocco gilt extra by Bedford a.e.g. gilt decorated spines red morocco labels; fine and impressive. "The work is intended as a supplement to the Bibliotheca Spenceriana forming vols. 5 and 6. It contains an account of the ancestors of Earl Spencer a history of the mansion with an account of the pictures and 32 engravings of the most important in the gallery a systematic catalogue of editions of the Scriptures an account of the Aldine editions not contained in the former volumes and a supplement to the works printed in the fifteenth century. 1827022928London: For Harding and Lepard 1827. Octavo. 4th edition in two volumes greatly enlarged and corrected. Frontispiece 562pp. and 579pp. 1 pp. items to be corrected. While this is the 4th edition it contains for the first time the best editions of the Hebrew Bibles and of the Greek and Latin Fathers. Several Greek and Latin classics introduced for the first time and some authors are described in a fuller manner such as Cicero Demosthenes and Euripides. It is also enriched with notices of copies of early rare and valuable impressions of the Classics printed on vellum which are found in various libraries in Europe. This is considered one of the first "leaf books" . On page 166 of Vol. I there is a small specimen leaf mounted from Pickering's Diamond Edition of the Greek New Testament. A very handsome set bound in 3/4 brown polished calf over marbled paper covered boards raised bands ruled in gilt red and black morocco spine labels lettered in gilt all edges red faint damp stain along upper edge of frontispiece with just a bit of cosmetics to spine ends light wear to corners. Tipped in is a manuscript note not important to front pastedown from previous owner or bookseller pertaining to the books and Dibdin. Very nice internally fresh. Previous owner's name D.M. Birkett and dated 1873. DM Birkett Junior Student of Ch Oxford 1868 2nd C Mod 1869 BA 3rd C 1872 MA Asst. Master in King's School Canterbury Headmaster of Sevenoaks Gr School 1878. Plate and specimen leaf p. 166 present in vol. 1. Some foxing to first and last few original pages diminishing quickly a bit more noticeable on v 2. Light fingermarks on upper corners of some pages. vol. 1 xiii 562 p. vol. 2 579 p. w/ 1 p. corrigenda. Large paper copies limited to 250 Dibdin's Reminscences p. 213. Considered the best of the editions of this work adding the best of both Hebrew bibles and editions of the early church fathers.
