Neat repair to small tear on title-page. End-papers browned. Considerable wear to covers – rubbing splitting and some marks corners heavily worn with loss of leather and board. Binding firm however. The philanthropist Thomas Bernard and Dibdin were associated together on this publication. Dibdin said that he wrote two thirds of the magazine. Small holes and minor wear along former stitching line old folds a little creasing and light marking but a sound and well-preserved example. Good. Scarce patriotic sheet music issued in the immediate aftermath of the Battle of Trafalgar and the death of Admiral Lord Nelson on 21 October 1805. Written by the dramatist and songwriter Thomas Dibdin 1771-1841 the piece formed part of Nelson's Glory a theatrical interlude performed at the Theatre Royal Covent Garden one of several productions mounted in response to Britain's greatest naval victory. The lyrics celebrate Nelson's triumph over the combined French and Spanish fleets while simultaneously memorialising his death in battle. The song was performed by the celebrated tenor Charles Incledon 1763-1826 among the most popular singers of the Georgian stage. His prominent appearance on the title-page reflects both his celebrity status and the commercial appeal of such commemorative productions. Printed by the Strand music publisher Preston and sold for one shilling the work was intended for immediate performance and domestic consumption during the wave of public mourning and patriotic enthusiasm that followed Trafalgar. . Contemporary full crimson crushed levant morocco bound by St. James' Duke Street London a dated binding with the elaborate gilt spine in 6 compartments and "London 1827" in gilt at the foot. From the library of Thomas Willement 1786-1871 British stained glass artist called "the father of Victorian Stained Glass" with his signature a small circular binders label and his personal bookplate from the Society of London Antiquaries. A handsome copy with an important provenance. First and only edition of one of the monuments of typographical bibliography and the most extravagant of all Dibdin's works. It was limited to under 1000 regular and 50 large paper copies. "Its publication was a financial success and doubtless marks the high-water mark of the Dibdinian bibliomania" Windle & Pippin A28. According to Bigmore & Wyman the work is written in the same dialogue manner as Dibdin's Bibliomania with the same interlocutors and may be properly described as a continuation of that work. Ã’Thomas Frognall Dibdin 1776-1847 English bibliographer who helped to stimulate interest in bibliography by his own enthusiastic though often inaccurate books by his share in founding the first English private publishing society and by his beautifully produced catalog of Lord SpencerÕs library which collection later became the nucleus of the John Rylands Library Manchester. His father the captain of a sailing ship was the inspiration for his uncle Charles DibdinÕs song Ã’Tom Bowling.Ó Both of DibdinÕs parents died on the passage from India to England in 1780 and at age four he became the ward of his motherÕs younger brother Charles Compton. Educated at St. JohnÕs College Oxford Dibdin began a legal career but took holy orders in 1805. His Introduction to the knowledge of rare and valuable editions of the Greek and Latin Classics 1802 attracted the notice of Lord Spencer through whose patronage Dibdin obtained a clerical appointment in London. His Bibliotheca Spenceriana 1814Ã15 became famous for the high quality of its printing. Dibdin traveled widely in search of books and manuscripts and his Bibliographical Antiquarian and Picturesque Tour in France and Germany 1821 is typical of his work in containing much lively anecdote many factual errors and some excellent engravings. His Bibliomania 1809 contributed to the publicÕs interest in old and rare books. Among his many other works is the two-volume autobiography Reminiscences of a Literary Life 1836.Ó -Britannica.
