Fair condition for a very rare item.<br /><br />The first of three French responses to Dibdin's Tour in France and Germany comprising of a translation of Dibdin's thirtieth letter from his Tour. What marks this publication out is the introduction written by the Parisian printer Georges Crapelet contesting Dibdin's veracity on occasions and criticising his general writing style as being too concerned with effect and over-complicated " Il vise singulièrement à l'effet ne dit jamais rien simplement ".</p><p>Crapelet contrasts Dibdin's petulance and perpetual enthusiasm with the patience and contemplation he argues is necessary for bibliographical studies.</p><p>That being said he also 'tips his printer's hat' to the quality of Dibdin's book production in paricular his abundant use of illustrations in his publications.</p><p><br />Windle & Pippin A39.</p><p><br /><strong>As a high value item shipping costs will be greater than the average quoted. Contemporary diced russia decorative gilt borders to boards and decorated compartments on spine leather spine-label misspelling "Quales" 8vo 19 cm. lxiv 332 pp portrait frontispiece. Uncommon. In the preliminary "Advertisement" leaf to Dibdin's extremely rare 1809 second edition which is not in Windle & Pippin Dibdin refers to "some hundred copies of this work having been sold" with Wolfe's name as editor and in the Reminiscences 1836 he states " this book is now so scarce that I know not where a copy may be found". Dibdin took his pseudonym from the name of a Strasbourg printer who settled in London about 1557. His principal editorial contribution was to modernize the orthography. Rubbed and worn at extremities some loss to head of spine small scrapes and marks to rear board some spotting and darkening to frontispiece and title-page otherwise Good. Completely rewritten this edition omits several sections provided in previous editions while adding for the first time the information on the polyglot Hebrew and Greek Bibles and the Greek and Latin Fathers. On page 166 Vol. I there is an actual tipped in specimen leaf from Pickering's Diamond Edition of the Greek New Testament. Still a useful reference tool and difficult to find in the fourth edition. The leaf portrays the angel Gabriel comforting Daniel - Daniel VIII:17. with text lines beneath. Excellent woodblock and leaf in excellent condition. Top corners with a little bit of bleed from previous adhesive on verso overall excellent and suitable for framing. 7.5 x 4.75 inches. The reproduction fomr the Douce & Dibdin were cut from wood by Messrs. Bonner and Byfield. The authors aimed to provide extremely accurate woodcut representations of the original Holbein designs to readers. Appears to be First American Edition- title page w/ correct publisher Backus & Whiting Albany & date 1806 spine states only Fenelon"". Full leather binding spine w/ gold gilt decoration 251 pages b/w frontis 6.75"" x 4.25"". Binding shows some soil edge wear rubbing sm. corner bumps- still actually displays fairly well. Hinge cracks to both covers- a bit fragile but they are still pretty well attached. Ancient ink signature inside front cover & at top margin of title page. Foxing to endpapers frontis title page- actual text is relatively bright & free of discolor- maybe minor spotting in some margins. Mild rippling to pages but no significant signs of moisture & no musty smell. To my mind- a decent example. Backus and Whiting hardcover
