L'opera composta negli anni della maturità è scritta in volgare e ci è stata tramandata in ottantadue codici. Tra i quali, il più attendibile sarebbe il Laurenziano XLII trascritto a mano da Francesco d'Amaretto Mannelli. L'opera è, ancora una volta, la prima indagine sulla storia, l'origine o l'etimologia delle parole dell'opera di Boccaccio. Il testo affronta in modo diffuso argomenti grammaticali e sintattici come proprietà linguistiche nominali e pronominali quali persona, genere, numero e caso, proprietà linguistiche verbali come tempo, aspetto, modo e voce ed elementi sintattici come causativi, conversioni e costruzioni impersonali.
