Il libro nasce dal convincimento che non sia possibile proporre un'interpretazione plausibile di qualsivoglia testo, massime se si tratta di opere dei primi secoli, se non tramite un corpo a corpo con le sfide offerte dalla sua lettera, e con un esauriente chiarimento di essa. Ciò non significa indugiare esclusivamente su tale aspetto (che pure, per un autore medioevale, è primario); piuttosto quella premessa è la sola che, implicando in ogni sua stazione argomentativa un quadro necessariamente più ampio, permette a ognuno dei due movimenti di irrobustirsi vicendevolmente. I tre grandi protagonisti della letteratura trecentesca sono qui oggetto tanto di analisi ravvicinate, quanto di indagini di più ampia portata, quanto infine di questioni di metodo (commento ai testi, problemi testuali).
