First edition of this translation. Limited to 1000 numbered copies. Thirteen stories most written in the style of "that curiously sophisticated thing the later French fairy tale" as Saintsbury notes in his introduction. This sophistication combined with a tendency towards "what we now call realism that is to say coarse or coarsened reality" makes for an invigorating artistic treat. The title story was first published in 1730 the others about 1742. The ninth book in the series of XVIII Century French Romances edited by Vyvyan Holland Oscar Wilde's son published by Chapman and Hall in the mid-to-late 1920s a useful resource for French fantastic fiction of the period. In actuality this encompassed a succession or simultaneity of various styles and this book breaks these down to Louis-Philippe Eugenie named after Louis Napoleon's wife the opera or more palatial style Beaux Arts the third Republic which of course followed Napoleon III's fall and exoticism. Covers metalwork jewelry ceramics furniture glass wallpaper lighting interior decoration with attention given to all the various chambers/rooms of a home. Finally the book devotes attention to how collections such as dog figurine collections or glassware collections are displayed. Of particular strength in the presentation is paper-mache and chandeliers. Other than neat inked inscription on ffep book is pristine.
