1750E0558axiv368 pages with one folding map and folding plan. Octavo 8" x 5" bound in full leather with five raised spine bands and red label in gilt lettering to spine and gilt decorative cover with gilt spine ends. translated by Joseph Morgan. Querard IV 614 - Playfair n° 220 - Chadenat n° 896 later edition first published in English in 1725.

This work is an influential description of Algeria first published in 1725 in French and expanded here with a detailed list of 73 Dutch ships captured by Algerian pirates. Algeria was at this time nominally ruled by the Ottoman Empire but retained a great deal of independence in practice. The work begins with a description of the various inhabitants including separate chapters on the Arabic and Turkish populations followed by chapters on its architecture military navy politics slavery trade etc. It was written by the Jacques Philippe Laugier de Tassy a former diplomat in Algeria and at this date commissioner of the French navy and consul in the Netherlands. It was translated into English as A complete history of the piratical states of Barratry a title that emphasized the notorious Algerian pirates. "Barbary" was not always a unified political entity. From the 16th century on wards it was divided into the political entities of the Regency of Algiers Tunis and Tripolitania Tripoli. Major rulers during the times of the Barbary states' plundering parties included the Pasha or Dey of Algiers the Bey of Tunis and the Bey of Tripoli. Before then the territory was usually divided between Ifriqiya Morocco and a west-central Algerian state centered on Tlemcen or Tiaret. Powerful Berber dynasties such as the Almohads 12th century and briefly thereafter the Hafsids occasionally unified it for short periods. From a European perspective its "capital" or chief city was often considered to be Tripoli in modern-day Libya although Marrakesh in Morocco was the largest and most important Berber city at the time. In addition Algiers in Algeria and Tangiers in Morocco were also sometimes seen as the "capital".

Condition:

folding plate with neat repairs contemporary calf gilt upper joint repaired but splitting again lower joint tender spine a little rubbed with slight loss to extremities else about a very nice copy. 198086753s. l.: S. n. 1980. Fine. S. n. s. l. s. d. ca 1980 14.50 x 21 cm 1 page Manuscript note by Philippe Soupault 22 lines in mauve ink on a sheet headed with this inscription: ""Les séances"" devoted to the famous ""sleep"" sessions conducted in André Breton's studio consisting of oneiric writings or texts dictated by a dreamer. The manuscript notes contain three deletions and corrections. Philippe Soupault considers his attempts questionable and even labels them as imposture distancing himself from any active participation in these practices: ""Neither Aragon nor I participated actively in the experiments called sleep sessions while Breton accepted with great interest Crevel's suggestion to engage in experiments he had discovered among friends. One had to fall asleep and recount what 'one saw'."" He recalls the results that were not always convincing: ""Crevel Desnos and Péret 'fell asleep' and despite his efforts Breton could not manage to fall asleep. Listening to the accounts of these sessions I could not help thinking that the 'sleepers' did not hesitate to simulate in order to make themselves interesting."" to such an extent that the intransigent leader of surrealism interrupted them: ""Breton realized the danger of one-upmanship and especially of Desnos's exaltation. He ceased attempting new sleep experiments."" Interesting recollections from the last living historical surrealist often harsh toward his former or new companions. S. n. unknown

1856168702London: John Murray 1856. His descriptions are colourful and graphic First edition of this rich contribution to the literature of the Great Game noted by Wilber as one of the most valuable works on Afghanistan especially for its "description of remote regions such as the Hazara and Ghur areas and the Helmand Valley". The work demonstrates the author's "masterly knowledge of the history geography and languages" of the area Yakushi. After returning wounded from the French expedition to Algeria in 1837 Joseph Philippe Ferrier 1811-1886 accepted employment as an instructor with the Persian army. He travelled to Persia as part of a rather ramshackle delegation which soon collapsed. Ferrier was appointed adjutant-general and "chef d'état major" on an eight-year contract and was sent to Zanjan to train cavalry battalions receiving the Order of the Lion and Sun. He later undertook an overland journey through Persia and Afghanistan to join the group of French officers at Lahore in the service of Ranjit Singh's burgeoning Sikh empire. In 1847 he was attached to the office of the governor-general of Fars finally securing a safe passage to Turkey in 1851. His other works include a History of the Afghans published in 1858.
