A highly accomplished doctor Hecquet received the official hat of the University of Paris in 1697 after an examination of "rare success" and was made Dean of the Faculty in 1712. Widely known for his medical writings Hecquet was one of the most notable and outspoken early advocates of vegetarianism. Influenced in particular by Porphyry Hecquet argued that the consumption of meat interfered with digestion and the circulation of the blood developing a digestive theory of "trituration" which emphasised the importance of the ability of the body to break down matter with foods which were the most difficult i.e. meat being those most likely to have a negative impact. For this reason Hecquet favoured the consumption of fish although asserted that a diet in which fruits grains nuts and seeds replaced meats was the ideal bringing humans closer to what he believed was their original state. In the present work an attempt to prove that Lent is in fact beneficial as opposed to harmful to health Hecquet lays out many of his key arguments for vegetarianism and in so doing provides one of the first scientific defences of a vegetarian diet. This second edition published one year after the 1709 first edition incorporates the author's considerable revisions and additions developed in response to public reaction and further research and is also prefaced with the testimonies of several "doctors regent" of the Faculty of Medicine of the Paris University declaring their approval and commendation of the work. Further details and images for any of the items listed are available on request. Lucius Books welcomes direct contact with our customers. Paris: Francois Fournier. 1710 hardcover

Veuve Ballard Paris 1787 19.6 x 25.5 cm Relié Complete year for 1787 with 50 issues of this health journal with continuous pagination pagination error between nos. 48 and 49. Contemporary half marbled sheep smooth spine bronze sheep lettering-piece rubbing to the spine domino-patterned paper boards a few scuffs to the boards corners worn and small nicks to the edges red edges contemporary binding. The journal founded in 1773 by Jean-Jacques Gardane doctor-regent of the Faculty of Medicine of Paris would run for 17 years with one volume per year except for the years 1773-1774. Jean-Jacques Gardane distinguished himself in the establishment in Paris of treatment houses for the poor and in the diffusion of fumigation boxes intended to revive the drowned and the asphyxiated of all kinds. From 1776 onwards the journal would be written by a society of physicians and Pinel was probably among the new editors from the end of 1784. The journal then played an important bibliographical role; scientific news was carefully reported but the periodical is especially notable at this stage for its declared fight against charlatanism and the section devoted to hygiene is particularly well represented; it is not impossible that it was written by Pinel himself see Roselyne Rey in Dictionnaire des journaux. Manuscript annotations in black ink on the verso of the front board. Veuve Ballard hardcover
168457732à Paris: Chez Etienne Michalet 1684. Fine. Chez Etienne Michalet à Paris 1684 9 x 16 cm relié Rare first edition illustrated with several diagrams in the text and 3 plates of leveling instruments invented by Picard for the leveling of the château de Versailles. Edition produced by Philippe de la Hire after Jean Picard's death and from manuscripts found at his residence. Contemporary full speckled brown sheep binding. Decorated spine with raised bands. Brown calf title label. 3 corners slightly bumped. Rubbing. Good copy. The work is divided into distinct chapters the first being a theory of leveling in relation to the earth's surface those that follow being an application of this theory and practical examples of leveling. One finds there for example the way to bring water to Versailles through measurements despite differences in terrain. The last part concerns the measurement of the earth. Picard had been charged by the Académie des sciences to measure one degree of meridian. The result found by Picard was the most accurate found at that time and allowed science and notably Newton to pursue his work on universal gravitation whereas he had been hindered by imprecise and faulty measurements. 198086791s. l.: S. n. 1980. Fine. S. n. s. l. s. d. ca 1980 14.50 x 21 cm 1 page Manuscript note with corrections by Philippe Soupault 22 lines in purple ink on a sheet bearing at the top this inscription: ""p.14 bis"" recalling the creation on May 18 1917 at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris of the famous ballet Parade by Sergei Diaghilev's Ballets Russes on a text by Jean Cocteau music by Erik Satie and scenography by Pablo Picasso. This work being inspired by Georges Seurat's painting Circus Sideshow. The co-author with André Breton of the surrealist manifesto ""Les champs magnétiques"" relegates the ballet to the rank of distraction for rear-guard shirkers completely unconscious of the historical stakes of the moment: ""C'était l'année de la bataille de Verdun le Tout-Paris les snobs et les embusqués parlaient d'un ballet ""russe"" intitulé Parade 1 dont Erik Satie disait : ""Picasso a créé les décors et les costumes et j'ai composé la musique et Cocteau a écrit trois lignes. Et Parade est de Cocteau."""" It was the year of the Battle of Verdun all of Paris the snobs and draft dodgers were talking about a ""Russian"" ballet titled Parade 1 of which Erik Satie said: ""Picasso created the sets and costumes and I composed the music and Cocteau wrote three lines. And Parade is by Cocteau."". Philippe Soupault is outraged by such indifference to the fate of the valorous Poilus in the trenches: ""Tandis qu'on applaudissait Parade j'entendais mes voisins revivre leurs cauchemars. On annonçait dans les communiqués des ""duels d'artillerie"". Plus de trois cents mille morts de chaque côté. Comment comme je le fis ne pas se révolter Le souvenir de cette révolte surgit en moi en prononçant le nom de Cocteau."" While they were applauding Parade I heard my neighbors reliving their nightmares. The communiqués announced ""artillery duels"". More than three hundred thousand dead on each side. How as I did not to revolt The memory of this revolt surges in me upon pronouncing Cocteau's name. Fascinating and acerbic memories from the last living historical surrealist concerning the revolutionary ballet ""Parade"" likening it to a preoccupation of idle bourgeois neglecting the hecatombs of the Great War. His Memoires was first published between 1524 and 1528 achieving immediate success with numerous reprints and earning the unique distinction among French-language texts of never having gone out of print. The first part written in the 1480s focuses on the reign of Louis XI particularly his rivalry with Charles the Bold while the second part composed in the 1490s examines Charles VIII's Italian campaign. Commines who served in a diplomatic capacity under both French monarchs devotes particular attention to the rise and fall of the Florentine preacher Girolamo Savonarola and the ultimate failure of French military and political ambitions in Italy.Commines's ""graphic style . and above all the keenness of his insight into the motives of his contemporaries an insight undimmed by undue regard for principles of right and wrong make this work one of the great classics of history"" Britannica. Often referred to as the ""French Machiavelli"" he shares affinities with the Italian political thinker particularly in his pragmatic and unsentimental approach to power.Willems 634; Tchemerzine III p. 468 ""jolie edition elzevirienne tres recherchee"". hardcover
