1892185348Paris: G. Masson 1892. An infrastructural and political revolution First and sole edition presentation copy signed on the dedication page "Hommage à Monsieur Gournay curé de Vertou. P. Bunau-Varilla 12 Septembre 1893". This comprehensive study was written by one of the driving forces behind the Panama Canal alongside de Lesseps. Most institutions list the text volume alone lacking the elaborate prospectus volume. Bunau-Varilla 1859-1940 was first sent to Panama in 1884 by the Compagnie Universelle du Canal Interocéanique where he rose to the position of chief engineer of the new canal. The attempt failed in 1889 and the company was dissolved after which he wrote a number of books to document and build support for the project's resumption. In this volume he both describes the work completed so far and his plan to complete the canal with locks. He "distributed copies of his book to the French Parliamentaries. However it did not meet any audience. as the Champer of Deputies' members did no want to be involved again in the burning subject of the Panama Canal" Loizillon p. 333 Bunau-Varilla tried again in 1894 and soon became a prominent figure in US-Panama relations. In particular when Colombia refused to ratify a treaty granting the United States rights to build the canal he encouraged the Panamanians to declare independence and his wife designed their new flag. He later signed the Hay-Bunau-Varilla Treaty giving the US control over the canal despite local protests. The canal would continue to occupy a central position in both the infrastructural and political development of Central America. This work contains a large number of photographic illustrations showing the construction as well as colour diagrams describing the geology of the area. The identity of Monsieur Gournay is unclear and there are no records linking Bunau-Varilla to the commune of Vertou. 2 vols quarto. With 45 half-tone photographic plates 5 folding colour folding map 5 colour diagrams 4 folding tables in text; text in French. 178090166Batavia Jakarta Jakarta Amsterdam: s. n. 1780. Fine. s. n. Batavia Jakarta Jakarta Amsterdam s. d. 1780 12.5 x 18.7 cm Broché This critical survey of the Dutch possessions in Indonesia survives in three versions English French and Dutch without it being possible to determine with certainty which constitutes the original edition.Only three copies are recorded in the CCF. Written at the outset of the Fourth Anglo-Dutch War 17801784 triggered by the early recognition of American independence by the United Provinces this pamphlet seeks to highlight the weaknesses of the administration of the Dutch East India Company and the vulnerability of its possessions to a French or British attack. In fact hostilities quickly turned to the disadvantage of the Dutch who in 1784 were compelled to make numerous colonial concessions following the Treaty of Paris. Philippe Fermin or Firmin 17201790 was a colonial physician who spent most of his life in Suriname which he famously described but he also published on various other colonial subjects.A disbound copy presented in a modern temporary marbled paper wrapper; page 13 has been slightly trimmed resulting in the loss of a letter at the end of certain words; a few light spots of foxing. s. n. unknown

17304557N/A: N/A 1730. A lovely manuscript copy of this selection of Royal ordinances attributed to Andre Barrigue de Montvalon. This work existed only in copied manuscript form from 1724 to 1752 when it was finally published. Our copy is an early manuscript. Attractive manuscript title with a coat of arms beneath. It appears to show the arms of a Marquis. The work contains the Royal Laws along with the commentary of Philippe Bornier. The author is quite critical of Bornier's work and corrects his errors and dating. As stated in the preface content in red ink refers to Bornier's work. Dates of ordinances are indicated in side notes. There are also two tables. One shows them in chronological order. The other in alphabetical. Text is throughout in a neat French secretarial hand. This work is almost identical to a 1728 version found in the Bibliotheque de Droit Schuman in Aix-en-Provence and a slightly earlier 1724 edition currently on sale in the USA. Our copy is slightly enlarged as BOUND IN is a lovely genealogical tree of the French Royal family and 8 pages 4 leaves of a red and black list of the kings and their significant dates. Condition. The full leather period binding is in good strong condition with just a little rubbing and slight loss to the head of the spine. Attractive gilt decoration and titles to spine. Marbled end papers. Internally the pages are in good clean condition with just a touch of movement to the binding. The final gathers with the genealogical details are slightly cracked to the binding and "sit proud" of the rest of the text block. Overall in excellent condition.
