This intimate circle originally comprising eight members would gather on Mondays at dinner to exchange ideas and to write; at the close of each meal every distinguished guest was required to set down a few lines whether in the coarse poissard style or in a more refined vein on paper. It was in this context that Les Fêtes roulantes ou les regrets des petites rues came into being in the wake of the celebrations held in Paris in honour of the Dauphin's second marriage to Marie-Josèphe de Saxe. Pastiche binding in plum half-shagreen spine with five raised bands framed by gilt dotted fillets and six compartments decorated with gilt fillets and fleurons marbled paper boards gilt top edge pastedowns and endpapers in shell-pattern marbled paper. Some minor rubbing to the paper of the lower board corners slightly bumped. Philippe de Commines also Commynes or Comines; 1447-1511 humanist writer and diplomat first in service to the Burgundian duke Charles the Bold and then to Charles' great rival Louis XI of France and his successors Charles VIII and Louis XII. Commines' Memoires written between 1488 and 1501 and first published in 1524 cover in their first part the events from the start of Commines' career to the death of Louis XI and in their second the Italian wars under Charles VIII. The Memoires have never been out of print; they remain foundational not just as historical sources on 15th century France but as a work that shaped the practice of history itself. In their psychological insight and attention to motives as well as events the Memoires 'bear witness to a watershed moment for modern conceptions of both historiography and the individual subject' essentially inventing 'a new literary genre one defined by its first-person vision of history' Kleiman 2013 Philippe de Commynes: Memory Betrayal Text pp. 3 8. Philippe de la Hire 1640-1718 was a French mathematician best known for his work on conic sections geodesy and astronomy. He was elected to the Académie Royale des Sciences in 1678 and in 1683 he was appointed to the chair of mathematics at the College Royale. 4 years later he was appointed in addition to the chair of architecture at the Academie Royale. Geometry which he had studied during 4 years in Italy was a special interest of his. In this work on dialling he considers the proper design and construction of sundials devoting a large section to instructions for determining the correct position of the lines on the dial-plate. The 54 unnumbered pages contain Tables of the Sun's Declination for the years 1681-1684 plus a Table of the Differences of Meridians of the most considerable places in the whole world in respect of Paris.
