1805AQ15607Paris: Chez Locard et al. 1805. 4 iii 1 285pp 1. With a folding table. Contemporary gilt-tooled calf contrasting red morocco lettering-piece. Rubbed marked and stained. Recent bookplate of John Fowles to FEP slight loss to lower corner of leaf I4. The first edition of a contemporary account of the Haitian Revolution from the perspective of the defeated French colonists. The insurrection began in 1791 with the enslaved people of Saint-Domingue now Haiti rising against French colonial rule. The revolt ended in 1804 with the Haitian people gaining independence from France thereby becoming the first country to be founded by those formerly enslaved. The book is primarily a defence of French actions during the conflict and in particular the conduct of military commander Donatien-Marie-Joseph de Vimeur vicomte de Rochambeau 1755- 1813. In 1801 Rochambeau was appointed to lead an expeditionary force against Saint- Domingue in an effort to restore French control. He proceeded to wage a war of extermination massacring thousands. His brutal tactics served only to galvanise the rebels and he was ultimately defeated in November 1803. John Fowles 1926-2005 English novelist notable works include The Magus 1965 and The French Lieutenant's Woman 1969. . First edition. 8vo. Chez Locard et al. unknown

1770159238Paris: Chez l'Auteur sur le Quay de l'Horloge 1770. Updated edition of 1714 map. Near fine. 52 x 69 cm hand-coloured map. Centrefold. Bottom corner chipped.

An updated edition of Delisle's important map of the Northern Hemisphere. When first printed in 1714 Delisle's map was the first to correctly place the west coast of North America by moving it farther east from previous mapping. California is correctly shown as a peninsula not an island. However this edition continues the coastline of the Pacific Northwest with a large island labeled Foufang that is apparently Chinese and serves as the western boundary of a large Mer de l'Ouest. Other conjectural rivers and lakes including Lake Valasco appear to the north. A rudimentary Alaska is named Presqu'Isle du Nord-Ouest. Bauche improved upon the depiction of Japan although Hokkaido Isle du Jeso is still not shaped correctly. Only a small remnant of the Terre de la Compagnie appears near Hokkaido.

Delisle or de l'Isle 1675-1726 was the son of a cartographer and a pupil of Jean Dominique Cassini who among other important contributions aligned the study of astronomy to the study of geography. Under Cassini's direction observations were made from locations all over the world that enabled longitudinal calculations to be made with much greater accuracy. Delisle continued his work with dedication constantly revising and improving his maps. Chez l'Auteur sur le Quay de l'Horloge unknown
469852Unbound. Fine. Gelatin silver photograph. Measuring approximately 11" x 14". Photographer's rubberstamp on verso: "Copyright by Philippe Halsman" and neat pencil notation in an unknown hand: "1958 / Marian Anderson." Three-quarter length portrait of Anderson dressed in an ornate embroidered brocade jacket standing and facing the camera with her eyes closed and mouth open in song. A fine copy with the image bright and crisp. From the 1940s through the 1970s Halsman's portraits of international figures appeared on the covers of widely circulated magazines such as Look The Saturday Evening Post and Life which published approximately 100 covers by Halsman. The National Portrait Gallery organized the first full exhibition of the photographer's work "Philippe Halsman: A Retrospective" which toured in 2000. His portrait of Anderson is an iconic image taken on January 7 1955 when Anderson became the first African-American to perform with the New York Metropolitan Opera. On that occasion she sang the part of Ulrica in Giuseppe Verdi's Un ballo in Maschera. She is also noted for her dramatic performance at the Lincoln Memorial in 1939 when she was denied the right to sing at the Daughters of the American Revolution Constitution Hall in Washington DC. Eleanor Roosevelt quit her membership in the DAR and arranged for Anderson to sing at the foot of the Lincoln Memorial. In 1961 she performed at President Kennedy's inauguration. An especially large and striking photograph of Anderson. unknown

5437Manuscript letter single folio sheet dated 16 February 1716 signed Louis in the hand of Louis XV's secretary countersigned by Louis Phélypeaux Marquis de La Vrillière Secretary of State addressed to Cardin Le Bret member of the parliament of Provence and nephew of the regent the Duc d'Orléans stating that a royal edict has been sent to the parliament of Provence 'which explains the circumstances in which merchants of my Kingdom must obtain passports from me to which edict I append a declaration forbidding any of my subjects to conduct commerce in the South Seas'; the verso with address of Le Bret; the document is complete legible and remarkably fresh with original folds. In France the period 1715-1723 is known as the Régence during which time Philippe Duc d'Orléans was in charge of the country's affairs owing to the fact that Louis XV was still a minor. In 1716 when this letter was written the War of the Spanish Succession had only recently ended and a member of the French House of Bourbon Philip V was now on the Spanish throne. The royal edict alluded to in the present letter ostensibly forbidding French subjects to conduct trade in the Pacific was typical of French diplomacy towards Spain in the early part of the eighteenth century. It was designed to allay Spanish fears that its monopoly of the rich resources along the western seabord of the Americas - namely the silver mines of Mexico and Peru - was under threat from the French but in reality the situation was quite different. While flattering the Spanish and officially appearing to discourage this type of trade France turned a blind eye toward its own merchants rounding Cape Horn and from the end of the seventeenth to well into the eighteenth century French private companies including the Compagnie de la Mer Pacifique or Mer du Sud and other private adventurers out of ports such as St Malo and La Rochelle conducted many voyages to the west coast of the Americas. These merchants carried royal passports which described the purpose of their voyages as being non-commercial in nature - they were simply exploring or acquiring scientific knowledge. Paradoxically these voyages proved so lucrative resulting in massive volumes of silver bullion for the French coffers that a genuine voyage of exploration in the Pacific was not carried out by the French until Bougainville 1766-69. Throughout this period England the new rival of France as a maritime superpower adopted an official policy towards the Spanish similar to that of the French - one of non-interference with the Spanish trading empire on the Pacific seaboard of the Americas - and it was not until the voyages of Wallis Carteret and Cook that it undertook serious exploration of the Pacific. unknown

The author indeed returns to France after a journey to Italy where he fell under the influence of Petrarch - his first poems were moreover criticized as neo-Petrarchism. His first book appeared in a collective volume and gathered his poems imitated from Ariosto. His clear frank mannerist and refined poetry a court poetry eclipsed that of Ronsard at the court of Henri III. It was in turn criticized and replaced by that of Malherbe. Desportes' literature nonetheless forms an important aspect of Renaissance poetry. This edition contains the loves of Diane the loves of Hyppolite Cleonice the elegies the poems imitated from Ariosto the new loves the epitaphs and various pieces. The co-author with André Breton of the surrealist manifesto ""Les champs magnétiques"" tells us with a touch of nostalgia of Benjamin Péret's arrival in the surrealist adventure: ""André Breton fut bien étonné de recevoir la visite d'une 'dame' qui lui tendit un n° de la revue Littérature. André Breton was quite astonished to receive a visit from a 'lady' who handed him an issue of the journal Littérature. She asked him to help her son Benjamin who wanted to come to Paris to become a writer. Some time after this approach Benjamin Péret arrived in Paris and was welcomed by Breton. He depicts the character of the newcomer: ""A cette époque Péret était timide inquiet et dévoué. Il admirait sans réserves et respectueusement André Breton et ses amis. Il était obéissant."" At that time Péret was shy anxious and devoted. He admired unreservedly and respectfully André Breton and his friends. He was obedient. and emphasizes his devotion to the group of disrespectful and disruptive surrealists: ""Lors du procès Maurice Barrès il accepta le rôle ingrat et dangereux du soldat inconnu venu témoigner en allemand."" During the Maurice Barrès trial he accepted the thankless and dangerous role of the unknown soldier who came to testify in German.
