A book that explores sharks via encounters while on the Calypso Cousteau's famous research vessel. The book is co-authored with his son Philippe who carried the family mantle and distinguished himself as well in ocean conservation; the majority of the narrative actually seems to be by Philippe but shorter sections by Jacques-Yves are interspersed. Rich with color photos and stills from films that the Cousteau team made. Jacques-Yves Cousteau remains the most famous oceanographer and marine science popularizer in history. He was also the co-inventor of first SCUBA diving system. <br /> <br /> A small quarto blue cloth boards with silver lettering on spine. Near fine with a band of faint soiling to lower edge of boards light yellowing on the free endpapers from the dust jacket's flaps and some toning to the appendix pages which are different non-glossy paper than the rest of the book. Raised bands. Boards with all gold-tooled edges. Vol. 4 is one-inch smaller than volumes 1-3 with matching binding. Age wear abrasions and surface hairline cracks on binding. Gold lettering on spine faded. Head and tail of spines chipped. Typewritten summary by previous owner pasted on insides of front boards in Vol. 1 and 4. Split on parts of joints on front and back board of all volumes firmly holding. Title-page in Vol. I tipped-in and repaired along gutter "L'hotel Dieu D'abbeville" handwritten on half-title of all volumes. Worming from page 945 through rear in Vol. 4 expertly repaired. Bottom edges from front endpaper through page 1999 in Vol. 3 expertly repaired staining near bottom edge on first 3 leafs of same volume. Engineering techniques of the mid-19th century were very sophisticated and many British engineers such as Henry Maudsley and William Donkin accepted that Lanz and Béttancourts seminal work had greatly influenced them. The work was originally published in 1808 by Jean Nicholas Pierre Hachette as a text for his engineering students. It complemented his own Programme du cours élémentaire des machines. Hachette taught at the Ecole Polytechnique the first school that instilled rigorous mathematical training for engineers and occupied an important role in engineering education in the 19th century. Spines have gilt lettering cracking to joints tears and chipping. Volume 2 spine is partially detached with the tail end torn away. Boards have mild rubbing wear and peeling chipping and moderate wear to extremities. Mild to moderate bumping to corners in some cases exposing the boards. Textblocks have marbled endpapers light age toning light stains scattered throughout and speckling to edges. Some of the end papers appears to have a line of adhesive near the spine which partially attaches the free end pages to the marbled pages. Volume 1 front marbled endpapers are partially attached has a pen inscription on the front free end page and light to moderate adhesive stains on the edges of pages 429-432. Volume 2 has light to moderate adhesive stains on the edges of the title page and pages 547-549. Volume 3 has light to moderate adhesive stains on the edges of the title page and pages 531-533. Text appears complete however volumes 2 and 3 contain half-title pages which volume 1 lacks. Text in Greek and Latin. Rare hand-colored lithograph map of South Florida the Keys and the Bahamas from renowned 19th century Belgian cartographer Philippe Vandermaelen's Atlas Universel. One page the map displays South Florida and the Bahamas including major cities as of 1825 with numerous Native American trails and roads recorded and an inset text regarding the flora and fauna of the Everglades. Matted and framed. The entire piece measures 29 inches by 27 inches. Published in 1827 and consisting of approximately 380 conically projected sheets of maps in six volumes Belgian geographer's Vandermaelen's Atlas Universel was the first atlas produced using the method of lithography and the first to use the same large uniform scale for all of the maps included in its pages. Regarded as one of the most important and remarkable innovations in the private enterprise of cartography the maps were uniquely designed to be joined into a three-dimensional terrestrial globe with a diameter of approximately 25 feet. Lithographed by H. Louis Philippe had reconciled the Orléans family with Louis XVIII in exile and was once more to be found in the elaborate royal court. However his resentment at the treatment of his family the cadet branch of the House of Bourbon under the Ancien Régime caused friction between him and Louis XVIII and he openly sided with the liberal opposition. FERDINAND I 1751-1825 King of the Two Sicilies was deposed twice from the throne of Naples: once by the revolutionary Parthenopean Republic for six months in 1799 and again by a French invasion in 1806 before being restored in 1815 at the end of the Napoleonic Wars. He was succeeded by his son FRANCIS I 1777-1830. At the death of his older brother Carlo Duke of Calabria in 1778 Francis became the heir-apparent to the thrones of Naples and Sicily with the title Duke of Calabria the traditional title of the heir apparent to the Neapolitan throne.
