Fortin's work of political theory yokes together the public and the private relating the development of government to the control of four essential vices: murder theft false witness and adultery. The book mirrors contemporary attitudes towards marriage and sexuality and it has been read as by Leslie Tuttle as reflecting the social imperialism imposed on France's new North American colonies in the 1660s p.79. Philippe Fortin de la Hoguette 1585-1668 fought in the French Wars of Religion and was present at the siege of La Rochelle in 1627. In his spare time he wrote several works of Catholic fideism corresponded extensively with the Dupuy brothers and smuggled many of Francis Bacon's manuscripts out of England after his death in 1626. Octavo 172 x 112 mm. Woodcut vignette to title page headpiece and initial. Contemporary mottled calf spine lettered panelled and decorated in gilt raised bands edges sprinkled red and brown. Ink manuscript "Elem: Pol:" to upper edge. Remnants of shelf label to lower spine end. 179541061Paris 1795. Uncolored oval bust portrait of a bespectacled Benjamin Franklin. 8-1/4" x 9-3/4" on a 10-1/2" x 13-3/4" sheet. Portrait surrounded by a black oval border. The portrait is captioned "Francklin." Directly beneath the oval border in small type is printed "Vanloo Pinxt" to the left and "P.M. Alex Sculpt" to the right. Very Good. <br /> <br /> According to Sellers's BENJAMIN FRANKLIN IN PORTRAITURE the engraving was done after an original portrait by the famed French painter Charles Philippe Vanloo in which Franklin was wearing fur-trimmed costume. The original portrait was painted while Franklin resided in Paris a "life portrait" dated between 1777 and 1785 and is now in the collection of the American Philosophical Society which was founded by Franklin. <br /> Sellers discusses our print: "the substitution a simple gray coat for the fur-trimmed costume of the original was undoubtedly in deference to the revolutionary feeling." It is one of a series of portraits begun in July 1790 and finished in September 1797. The 'Francklin' was exhibited in 1795 so the estimated date of the portrait is between July 1790 and 1795. This print was engraved after Vanloo's portrait by the noted French engraver Pierre-Michel Alix who was known for his portraits of leading French citizens and prominent personalities. Eighteenth-century calf scuffed especially at front cover; spine with raised bands and gilt morocco morocco labels; edges stained red; green silk ribbon marker. Title leaf skilfully mounted on eighteenth-century paper. Text crisp and clean with ample borders.<br /> <br /> Only edition of this rare and highly unusual Hebrew and Aramaic dictionary composed by the formerly Jewish convert to Catholicism Mordechai Cresque of Carpentras who derived his new name Philippus d’Aquin or Aquinas; 1578-1650 from the place of his baptism in Aquino Italy. Printed almost entirely in the fine bold rashi characters "grosse glose hebraicque" cut by Guillaume I Le Bé in 1592 only the vocalised quotations and the lemmata are in Le Bé's square Hebrew script. Apart from the Latin title dedication approbations a poetic encomium and the alpha-numeric leaf signatures the work is printed entirely in Hebrew characters. It ends with a short notice in Latin and Hebrew on the printing errors which are corrected on the last three pages. The author announces at the title that all Hebrew biblical and rabbinic-talmudic and Aramaic terms are to be found in Ma'arikh ha-Ma'arakhot including many that do not appear in any existing lexicons among Jews or Christians. D'Aquin notes in particular that rare and difficult terms in rabbinic and cabalistic literature along with obscure abbreviations are all clearly explained. <br /> <br /> "The work is called in Hebrew Maarik ha-maarikot i. e. “Survey of the orders†a term which in the plural is also applied to "battle-lines" Wolf 140 translates Disponens ordines sive acies. One cannot help wonder if there is not a connection with the political situation at the time when the Huguenot town of La Rochelle had to submit to the French Crown in 1628. The privilege for our book has "Données au Camp devant la Rochelle le 19. Septembre 1628" and the work is dedicated to Cardinal Richelieu whose conquest of La Rochelle is also extolled in a Hebrew poem by the author. But the types are also reminiscent of war: did not Le Bé cut them "après le siège de Paris pour passer l'ennui" see Carter & Vervliet p. 15. They were prominently displayed afterwards in Vitray's type-specimen of 1636" Smitskamp. Among the eleven scholars whose approbations grace the present volume are Gabriel Sionita 1577-1645; professor of Arabic and Syriac at the College de France; Gilbert Gaulmin 1585-1665; Orientalist; Denis Petau 1583-1652; Jesuit theologian; and Jean Morin 1591-1659; theologian and Orientalist. He left his collection to the King. He also studied the archaeological remains of the Gauls and Volumes III-VII are titled "Recueil d'Antiquites Egyptiennes Etrusques Grecques Romaines et Gauloises." Bound in full calf the spines in six compartments gilt with rococo floral tools and two morocco lettering-pieces. Wear to extremities; one board detached from each of Volumes III and III; rear board of VII loose; some superficial splits to hinges and abrasions to boards. Light spotting here and there faint dampstain to margins of two volumes discoloration to tops of a few boards but on the whole internally clean. Toned uniformly paper thin in places where an old backing has been removed; trimmed with the imprint at bottom retained; good.<br /> Significant map of the Pacific Northwest and the region that would become Alaska. The map extends from Greenland to a bit west of Irkoust; and south to include all of California. It includes the discoveries of the Russians in 1723 1732 and 1741 the tracks of Bering's first and second voyages Joseph Nicolas Delisle's voyage with Captain Tchirikow in 1741 and other voyages. But more importantly it features the imaginary cartographic theories of Philippe Buache for the first time on a printed map. The west coast of North America is entirely fictitious north of Cap Blanc with an enormous Sea of the West Lac Valasco and Isle of Bernarda; a network of rivers and lakes making up most of a Northwest Passage is derived from the apocryphal voyages of the Spanish Admiral Bartholome de Fonte.<br /> Wa-NWC 566. 65397Brussels 1825. THE FIRST MAP TO CALL RIYADH BY ITS MODERN NAME. Original lithographed map 53 x 70.5 cm with contemporary hand-colour in outline. Published in the first atlas to cover the landmasses of the entire world on a uniform scale constructed as a modified conical projection and if assembled forming a globe with a diameter of 7.75 metres although only one such was known to have been made by the author himself and requiring a specially designed room. It offered the largest picture of the earth's surface available in the nineteenth century and was the first atlas to be produced throughout by lithography. It is also significant for being the first large-scale European mapping of the Arabian peninsula based on the very latest authorities. This particular map of Arabia is the first map to call Riyadh by its modern name here El-Ryad. [Brussels, 1825]. unknown

This dramatic act performed in the liberating spirit of the American and French Revolutions found immediate and enduring favor in the popular imagination as a symbol of a new attitude toward the insane and ignited a general desire for more humane treatment of the mentally ill that culminated in the English non-restraint movement of the mid-nineteenth century. Yet humanitarian treatment of the insane although crucial to Pinel's psychiatric work was not that work's sole focus for Pinel also devoted himself to establishing psychiatry as a scientifically based branch of medicine. His Traité replaced the speculation and theorizing characteristic of earlier discussions of insanity with his own practical observations of the lunatics of the Bicêtre whose illnesses could now be observed undistorted by cruel treatment. He retained the old classifications of mental illness stating that contemporary medicine was as yet too primitive for more precise categories but did introduce some subdivisions isolating mania from delirium and recognizing the relationships between periodic mania melancholy and hypochondria. First issue copies contain a signature and imprint underneath each plate and watermarks no later than 1805. However copies exist with plates watermarked as late as 1824. The 1824 copies contain a completely reset text in contrast our text matches that of the first edition and an engraved title page supplied by the publisher from left over copies of Loutherbourg's completely separate earlier work Picturesque Scenery of Great Britain London R Bowyer 1801 & reissued 1808. 37323Very Good. Two striking original photographs taken during the filming of Hans Richter's "8 x 8". One of the two photographs is signed in red ink by Philippe Halsman the photographer of both. A note on the back of the signed photo notes that Halsman signed this picture and that the film's cinematographer Arnold Eagle is visible in the background. The photos are mounted on discolored pieces of cardboard. In his original script for the film's prologue Richter wrote: ".my film 8 x 8 is a bizarre comedy-drama signs and sounds not only out of this world probably not even in the next. 8 x 8 mixes equal parts of Freud and Lewis Carroll with Venice Venus and Old Vienna Cocteau and Bullfights surrealism magic dreams girls and practically anything else that may currently be in your minds." Hans Richter undertook 8 x 8 at the suggestion of Marcel Duchamp a chess enthusiast after The Minotaur a planned sequel to the 'Narcissus' episode of Dreams That Money Can Buy failed to secure funding although 8 x 8 engaged similar concerns. 'Chess is so universal' wrote Richter to Jean Cocteau about this new project 'that practically every human situation has its corresponding move among the countless possibilities of chess.' The filmmaker further recognized a kinship between the work which took its title from the layout of a chessboard and Lewis Carroll's Through the Looking Glass. Some of the artists who appeared in this film included Max Ernst Fernand Léger Marcel Duchamp Man Ray and Alexander Calder. The photographs are accompanied by a reprint of an article that was written by Lewis Carroll collectors August and Clare Imholtz for the Fall 2019 issue of "Knight Letter" about the film and its participants along with a discussion of each of the photos.
