Halsman's credit/copyright stamp appears on the verso and the photo may have been shot to accompany an article about New York opera that appeared in LIFE 11 April 1949 XXVI:15. However Strick ran into disagreements with Fox executives and was replaced with George Cukor who shot the remainder of the film in Hollywood. <br/><br/>Set in Alexandria in 1938 a young British schoolmaster named Darley meets Pursewarden a British consular officer. Pursewarden introduces him to Justine the wife of an Egyptian banker. Darley befriends her and discovers she is involved in a plot against the British the goal of which is to arm the Jewish underground movement in Palestine. <br/><br/>Partially shot on location at Ennejma Ezzahra a palace at Sidi Bou Said in Northern Tunisia. <br/><br/>Blue titled wrappers noted as Final on the front wrapper and production No. 842 dated July 2 1968. Title page present dated July 2 1968 noted as Final with credit for screenwriter Marcus. 152 leaves mimeograph duplication with blue and pink revision pages throughout dated variously between 7-15-68 and 11-22-68. "In his Theorie analytique du systeme du monde Pontecoulant successfully made the Mecanique Celeste of Pierre de Laplace more accessible to a popular audience in France and England and via translation in Germany. This work included Pontecoulant's calculation that the perihelion of Halley's comet IP/Halley would occur on 31 October 1835 within 3 days of the actual event. Pontecoulant was a member of several scientific societies; a lunar crater at latitude 58°.7S and longitude 66°.0 E is named in his honor." – Marvin Bolt within: Hockey The Biographical Encyclopedia of Astronomers I p. 686. A fourth volume appeared in 1846. / Pontecoulant had a career serving in the military when upon retirement he devoted himself to the pursuit of mathematics and astronomy. Moderate rubbing with some wear to spine ends and corners some fading to spine front hinge starting rear hinge cracked but secure rear free endpaper lacking. Two partial splits near center of text block numerous unopened signatures. Light foxing to a few leaves interior otherwise fresh. $350. This was one of several publications inspired by the controversy surrounding the claims of Montpensier's children to the Spanish throne. Some argued that the Treaty of Utrecht which ended the War of the Spanish Succession annulled this claim. For them the treaty clearly stated that the crowns of France and Spain remain separate. The anonymous author of the present book does not agree. He supports his claim with an ingenious argument. 1944018565NY: Farrar & Rinehart. 1944. A novel of Haiti by these two Haitian brothers which won a prize in the Second Latin American literature contest sponsored by Farrar & Rinehart. Inscribed by Thoby-Marcelin to Barbara Howes in 1971. Poet Barbara Howes edited From the Green Antilles one of the first anthologies of Caribbean literature to appear in the U.S. in 1966. She was married to the poet William Jay Smith. This book has the Howes/Smith bookplate on the front pastedown. Translated by Edward Larocque Tinker who designed and illustrated the book and who provides an introduction to it entitled "Haitian Background" explaining both the history and the metaphysics of Haitian religious beliefs. Fine in a good price-clipped dust jacket threatening to split at the flap folds. An important book and especially scarce signed. Unless otherwise noted our first editions are first printings. Printed in Paris in the Atelier of Georges Leblanc on hand made paper from Papeteries de Rives. Hiquily b. 1925 in Paris studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris from 1948 to 1953 and he attended the workshops of sculptors Jean Tinguely and Germaine Richier devoting himself almost exclusively to kinetic metal sculpture. He exhibited for the first time in 1955 at the Palms Gallery in Paris and at the Contemporaries Gallery in New York in 1959. Franco Crainz rubber stamp on title. Very good. FIRST EDITION. Title translates as: "ON THE INDECENCY OF MALE PHYSICIANS ATTENDING TO WOMEN IN CHILD-BIRTH." In this work the pious French physician and theologian Philippe Hecquet argued that it is immodest and indecent to have male accoucheurs deliver their children and that a woman had a "natural right" to have a female midwife deliver their baby. In the second part of this two-part work Hecquet argues that it is a woman's duty to nurse her infant. He documents the problems of producing milk for nursing and concerns about the health of the mother. Philippe Hecquet was "M.D. of Reins 1684 and physician to Port-Royal 1688-93. . . Hecquet . . . had to enter the Paris Faculty as a student in 1694 obtaining the license two years later and the 'bonnet de docteur' in 1697.
