" Philippe Soupault, Mémoires d'oubli (1927-1933), pp. 133-134, Lachenal & Ritter, 1986. 1783242998Dezauche 1783. Map. Engraving with hand coloring. Image measures 19.75 x 25.5". Sheet measures 21.5 x 30".

This map of Canada and the northern United States extends north from around the latitude of Baltimore all the way up to Baffin Bay along the shore of Greenland. Published by Jean-Claude Dezuache in 1783 it is the eighth revision of a map originally published by De L'Isle in 1703. The map is notable as the first to include "Etats-Unis" in the title coming as it did on the heels of the American Revolution. In fact this appearance is one of the earliest appearances of the name United States Etats-Unis on a printed map. The map is compelling in its accuracy particularly with regard to the Great Lakes depicting them as fully enclosed and properly placed in longitude and latitude. There is also excellent detail around the Hudson and Mississippi Rivers. The elaborate cartouche is decorated with a beaver natives one of whom is bearing a scalp and Jesuit explorers. Furthermore the fleurs-de-lis that previously adorned the shield at the top of the cartouche has been erased and the crown converted into a halo suspended above an orb a response to the execution of the king following the French Revolution Below a table of colors delineates the boundaries of the United States and European possessions. Indian nations are also labeled. The map is in excellent condition with wide margins as issued. Guillaume De L'Isle 1675--1726 was a French cartographer known for his popular and accurate maps of Europe and the newly explored Americas and Africa. He is important as the first "scientific" cartographer who incorporated the most current information on exploration and topography into his maps. Philippe Buache 1700--1773 was a student of De L'Isle and became one of the most active proponents of the so-called school of theoretical cartography active in mid-18th century France. This map is fascinating record from a remarkable moment in North American history.

Dezauche unknown

This collection of essays and entries reveal many of the faults and scandals of the reign of Louis XI. Even though Commines supported the king the content of the 'Memoirs' portrays Louis XI negatively. Commines and this work are considered one of the primary sources of 15th-century European history. In addition to the court of Louis XI Commines discusses Italian wars during the reign of Charles VIII of France.

This beautiful 1674 folio edition of Comines' "Memoirs" was published by Mearne and Martyn.

Item number: #26006

Price: $750

COMINES Philippe de

The history of Philip de Commines knight Lord of Argenton

London: Printed for Samuel Mearne John Martyn and Henry Herringman 1674.

Details:

· Collation: Complete with all pages

o 16 348

· Language: English

· Binding: Leather; tight and secure

· Size: ~11.75in X 7.75in 30cm x 20cm

Our Guarantee:

Very Fast. elala4542New York: Frederick A.Stokes Company Publishers 1914. First American Edition of a classic of working class literature. The illegitimate son of an inspector in the Royal Irish Constabulary Noonan who was baptized with the name Croker spent ten years in South Africa after which time he settled in Hastings. "Working in the building trade at subsistence wages he contracted tuberculosis was influenced by socialist writers such as Robert Blatchford and became an active member of the unusually large Hastings branch of the Social Democratic Federation whose banner he painted. He spent his spare time during the last ten years of his life writing by hand the 1800-page manuscript of The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists which brought posthumous fame" ODB On the title-page of the first edition which was substantially abridged from the original manuscript his pen-name is incorrectly spelled ëTressallí. Writing in the Manchester Evening News in April 1946 George Orwell praised the book's ability to convey without sensationalism "the actual detail of manual work and the tiny things almost unimaginable to any comfortably situated person which make life a misery when one's income drops below a certain level." He considered it "a book that everyone should read" and a piece of social history that left one "with the feeling that a considerable novelist was lost in this young working-man whom society could not bother to keep alive. 12mo. pp. ix 385. cloth bit rubbed cloth puckered on spine & inner portion of rear cover New York: Frederick A.Stokes Company Publishers, [1914] hardcover
1784102511784. Engraving. Proof before letters. Printed on laid paper with watermark. In excellent condition with the exception of some very light foxing in the right margin. Image size: 15 x 11 7/8 inches. A fantastic proof before letters of this decorative Rococo print of a happy couple the morning after their wedding.

Genre painting came back into favor when the Academy admitted Watteau's "The Pilgrimage to Cythera" to its ranks in 1717. From that point on a fashion for decorative subjects swept the country influencing an entire generation of French artists. This craze for intimate boudoir scenes did not subside until after the onset of the Revolution when the frivolous tastes of the aristocratic elite were dispelled and a more sober era descended upon French art. This print is a wonderful example of French Rococo tastes. The picture is set in a sumptuous bedroom the morning after a young aristocratic couple's wedding. The young bride sits on her father's lap while he speaks with his new son-in-law. Two chambermaids ready her toiletries while another closes the curtains on the marriage bed. This beautiful print is the pendant picture to Pierre Antoine Baudouin's "Le Coucher de la Mariee" which depicts the young newlyweds retiring to bed on their wedding night. Baudouin's painting was engraved by Moreau le jeune and finished by F. P. Simonet. Dugoure's frivolous scene is beautifully engraved by Triere creating a truly captivating image which epitomizes the grand era of French Rococo art.

Nevill French Prints of the Eighteenth Century p. 135. unknown books
