18713Liverpool: W. A. Day 25 South John Street. Undated 1880s. A scarce piece of Liverpool printing ephemera. Dimensions approximately 63 x 51 cm. Both sides printed in light blue. Text and illustrations complete. In need of expert cleaning and repair: grubby and stained with chipping to extremities and some closed tears. At the head of the one side is the masthead of 'The Employment Exchange Edited by Charles H. Megson' 'The only recognized medium for speedy Employment. Absolutely without rival.' with illustrations of figures at work. Among the other engravings on that side surrounding a central printed message from Day are four buildings including Allinson's department store two portraits a church organ a bouquet of flowers three printing presses and a football bearing the design of the National Sporting Goods Company Liverpool. Several carry captions relating to price e.g. 'Any View from Photo same size quality and style 35/-; cheaper than Zinography.'. The examples on the other side again surrounding a printed message by Day are of 'The very Latest & Most Useful Novelty specially made for Note & Letter Headings also Invoice & Memorandum Forms.' At the foot of the page is a list of seven 'Advantages' of using these headings. All twelve captioned e.g. 'Price for pierced electro mounted on Baywood 4/6 This electro is fitted up with Type to illustrate the effect.'. There do not appear to be any items ascribed to Day on COPAC. Liverpool: W. A. Day, 25 South John Street. Undated [1880s?]. unknown

np. Title page and text ruled in red throughout. 24mo. Original full decorated paper binding. Cover paper label. Designed and printed by Kurt H. Volk. Signed by Kurt H. Volk. Number 12 of a very Limited Edition. Lovely little copy. Kurt Hans Volk (1884-1962) was born in Germany, and probably trained as a printer/typographer there. He worked for many years at N.W. Ayers in Philadelphia before starting his own typographic firm in 1927. He widely lectured on advertising typography and authored the important work: "Using Type Correctly." He greatest influence as a designer was probably as a consultant to the Merganthaler Linotype Company. Today he is probably best known for a private series of keepsakes and limited edition books distributed to friends at Christmas. We are pleased to be able to offer one of these here. Fine books from earlier Christmas seasons make great gifts today. CHRISTMAS/W69x2
