75p. Title page printed in red and black. Printed on Japan vellum. Partially unopened. Small 24mo. Original stiff printed Japan vellum wraps with large red initial on front cover. Slightly soiled. Limited Edition of only 425 copies. Third Edition. Nice example." The story is about an attempt to uncover the identity of Mr W.H., the enigmatic dedicatee of Shakespeare's Sonnets. It is based on a theory, originated by Thomas Tyrwhitt, that the Sonnets were addressed to one Willie Hughes, portrayed in the story as a boy actor who specialized in playing women in Shakespeare's company. This theory depends on the assumption that the dedicatee is also the Fair Youth who is the subject of most of the poems. The only evidence for this theory is a number of sonnets (such as Sonnet 20) that make puns on the words 'Will' and 'Hues." - Wiki. Oscar Fingal O'Flahertie Wills Wilde (1854-1900) was an Irish writer and poet. After writing in different forms throughout the 1880s, he became one of London's most popular playwrights in the early 1890s. Today he is remembered for his epigrams, his novel The Picture of Dorian Gray, his plays, and the circumstances of his imprisonment and early death. - Wiki. PRESS/W39. **PRICE JUST REDUCED!

This work contains all 36 extant poems attributed to Scott ca. 1520-82/3 including what is considered to be his most historically important work "Ane New Yeir Gift to Quene Mary" 1562 written in support of the young Scottish queen caught between Catholic and Protestant agendas. His other poems consist largely of lyric verses on love and sexuality which DNB describes as possessing "exceptional metrical variety and vernacular directness" with "a musician's ear for rhythm and melody." Scott's poems are known to us via the Bannatyne manuscript now held in the National Library of Scotland which ranks among the most important documents of Scottish Medieval literature. Written by George Bannatyne in 1568 during a period of confinement due to an outbreak of plague it contains a mixture of both secular and religious material including the sole extant copies of several texts. In the preface to the present work the publisher notes that Scott's poetry has been faithfully reproduced from that manuscript and thus "for the first time accurately printed." Very little is known regarding the life of Alexander Scott but he seems to have been attached to the court of Mary Stuart through John Erskine a guardian and counselor to the queen. Given the very limited number of copies made it is not surprising that this work is extremely rare on the market. Printed [by Robert Anderson] for Private Circulation unknown

1935003336Oxford the Clarendon Press 1935 RARE to find this in a complete dustwrapper. Undamaged but there is a stain on the front of the jacket measuring a couple of centimetres or so. Exceptionally clean and undamaged book fortunately printed on very fine quality paper. A great success this is the first reprint one month after the book's appearance. Still provocative today especially in the highly emotive present day when a religious and reactionary backlash is making far too much noise. The case for a reasonable and logical atheism is clearly espoused here in wonderful language. 0.0 0.0 0.0. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. Oxford, the Clarendon Press hardcover

21 p. + Frontis and text illustrations. 12mo. Original full cloth binding, stamped in gold. Original dust jacket. Privately printed for George Zabriskie as a Christmas greeting presented to Mrs. (David) Van Dusen, signed by Zabriskie. George Albert Zabriskie (1860-1954) was President of the New York Historical Society from 1939-1947, and Honorary President from 1948 until his death in 1954. He was a great enthusiast of fine books and book binding, and an expert amateur hand-tooler and finisher of books. Though he lived in New York City, he "wintered" in Florida, and issued these charming Christmas keepsakes from his home: "The Doldrums" a Mission-Spanish Revival residence designed by Albert Pierce. This tale of John Charles Fremont (1813-1890) was from a paper for the New York Historical Society. A bright copy of a nice little keepsake. W69.

17747047London: W. Bowyer and J. Nichols 1774. Half Leather. Very Good binding. Octavo. xvi 144 2 adverts pp. First edition. In 19th century half speckled calf with corners and marbled papers over boards. Joints are moderately rubbed but sound; light shelfwear; a very few instances of early ink corrections or brief annotations in addition to Bowyer's name being added in ink to the title page in an early hand; additionally a 20th word in green ink on p. 1; one leaf M4 has been excised likely at the time of printing as the text is complete and the pagination is correct matching catalogued and digitized copies.

In content this work comprises an abridged reprinting of Conyer Middleton's Dissertation 1734-5 correctly arguing that contrary to popular opinion William Caxton was the first printer in England. The second essay is an English translation of Gerard Meerman's Origines Typographicase in which the Dutch collector argues that the first printing was done by Laurentius in Harleim improved upon by Gutenberg and then Schoeffer in Mainz. Both essays are accompanied by intelligent commentary by the printers in addition to appendices on early Greek Hebrew and polyglot books. Bigmore and Wyman state "The book although it has been robbed of its authority by modern researchers at the time of its publication brought in great praise to its compilers the 'learned printers' of the age" p. 75. An important book delving into the history of printing in Europe that was reprinted several times in the 18th century. This copy of the first edition is from the library of American collector Albert A. Howard with his small monograph plate on the rear pastedown. Gorgeous binding elegant typography; a book to treasure. With an enthralling chronology and a first rate introduction by Richard Dawkins this a perfect example of what John Updike said 'This Everyman series is the edition of record.' 2010ABE-2676800439Penguin London 2010 SEALED PENGUIN CLASSICS EDITION.David Lodge wrote a brilliant review of this essential book. I would like to quote a section from it and I hope David Lodge will not mind me doing so: "The way the manuscript has been ingeniously edited and reproduced overcomes to a large extent the disappointment and frustration inherent in reading an unfinished and disconnected narrative and achieves an interesting aesthetic effect unintended by the author. If the manuscript had been printed in the conventional way we would have hurried through it vainly seeking some coherent plot or hint of its ultimate direction. As it is the book invites us to linger over the text's quiddity relishing not just its stylistic feats but also the physical marks on the index cards the poignantly shaky hand of an ailing author his revisions and insertions and smudged rubbings out and the tantalising space he left to be filled in later when he found the right word. 'The only way he could posse! ss her was in the most position of copulation'. Few readers will probably read the whole text continuously from the cards but the matching printed text underneath also has a defamiliarising effect on the act of reading when quite often the last line does not extend to the margin. Page 7 for instance ends 'when they and their dog do not happen' and by habit one's brain tries to make sense of this as a complete clause before turning the page to find 'to need it.' This is an effect akin to a caesura in poetry and indeed the structure of the work as a whole is more akin to modern poetry of the Eliot-Pound kind than a conventional novel shifting from one voice to another without explanatory links. Towards the end these jump cuts become more abrupt and there are more cards which bear just a few lines sometimes evidently Nabokov's notes to himself. A line from The Waste Land 'These fragments I have shored against my ruins' might have been a suitable epigraph for The Original of Laura but the last lines of page 21 would make a better one: 'Only by identifying her with an unwritten half-written rewritten difficult book could one hope to render what'. Is it as the blurb claims Nabokov's 'final great book' No. Does it contain brilliant funny astonishing sentences only Nabokov could have written Yes. Should it have been preserved and published Definitely." This new copy is still sealed. It is a heavy volume and it is undoubtedly a typical Nabokov conundrum. To all addicts of this extraordinary writer this is utterly essential. Extra postage may be needed depending on destination.
