It is often known in English as the Arabian Nights from the first English language edition 1706 which rendered the title as The Arabian Nights' Entertainment. The work was collected over many centuries by various authors translators and scholars across West Central South Asia and North Africa. The tales themselves trace their roots back to ancient and medieval Arabic Persian Indian Egyptian and Mesopotamian folklore and literature. In particular many tales were originally folk stories from the Caliphate era while others especially the frame story are most probably drawn from the Pahlavi Persian work HazÄr AfsÄn Persian: Ùزار اÙسا٠lit. A Thousand Tales which in turn relied partly on Indian elements. What is common throughout all the editions of the Nights is the initial frame story of the ruler ShahryÄr from Persian: Ø´ÙرÙار meaning ""king"" or ""sovereign"" and his wife Scheherazade from Persian: Ø´Ùرزاد possibly meaning ""of noble lineage"" and the framing device incorporated throughout the tales themselves. The stories proceed from this original tale; some are framed within other tales while others begin and end of their own accord. Some editions contain only a few hundred nights while others include 1001 or more. Some of the stories of The Nights particularly ""Aladdin's Wonderful Lamp"" ""Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves"" and ""The Seven Voyages of Sinbad the Sailor"" while almost certainly genuine Middle Eastern folk tales were not part of The Nights in Arabic versions but were added into the collection by Antoine Galland and other European translators. The innovative and rich poetry and poetic speeches chants songs lamentations hymns beseeching praising pleading riddles and annotations provided by Scheherazade or her story characters are unique to the Arabic version of the book. Printed on laid paper with lined watermarks. Leather spine bears five double gilt bands and a red label stamped gilt lettering. Cover shows discoloration and wear especially at the edges. Corners are bumped. Spine leather is crackled with cracks starting within all joints yet boards are firmly affixed to binding. Front inner hinge is cracked yet binding is sound solid and tight. Leaves have fairly evenly toned. Muted foxing throughout. An absolutely delightful edition with fantastic tales and imaginative stories where the first line of on page i under "A Dialogue Consisting Chiefly of Soliloquies" reads: "Where friend in the name of nonsense did you rake all this rubbish together" xi 284 pp. PROVENANCE: The book's provenance is intriguing as it bears the ex-libre bookplate of "George Gunning Horton" affixed to front inner pastedown. Likely the son of Sir Robert Gunning 1st Baronet 8 June 1731 – 22 September 1816 who was a British diplomat. He served as the British minister in Denmark 1765–1771 in Prussia in 1771 and in Russia 1772–1776. Gunning was appointed a Knight Companion of the Order of the Bath on 9 July 1773 and the first Baronet of Eltham in the County of Kent on 27 October 1778. The Gunnings were an Irish family. His country seat was at Horton in Northamptonshire England which he purchased 1782; he was the eldest son of Robert Gunning - and his mother was Catherine the daughter of John Edwards. The family was descended from Richard Gunning who was an uncle of Peter Gunning the Bishop of Ely who had settled in Ireland in the time of James I. The Gunning family stayed at Horton Hall until 1888 when it was sold to Pickering Phipps the Northampton brewer. Later still it was sold to George Winterbottom. In 1757 Sir Robert married Anne daughter of Robert Sutton of Scofton Nottinghamshire by whom he had a son George William who succeeded to the title and to whom it is believed this book was previously owned. He also a daughter Charlotte Margaret maid of honour to Queen Charlotte who married on 6 January 1790 the Hon.
