1583000119Laugingen (d. i. Graesse VI, 39; Brunet IV, 1122f.; Pritzel 7430; VD16: R 431; Short-Title Catalogue of German Books in the British Museum, p. 727.

Title in Arabic: Anti-Dühring.Moscow Progress Publishers 1984.16 REVOLUTIONARY INTERNATIONALIST MOVEMENT. Title in Arabic: Declaration of the Revolutionary Internationalist Movement.1984. Unique collection of predominantly Marxist-Leninist works of the 1970s and 1980s mainly in Arabic and Persian. It provides an exceptional view into the efforts made to persuade the people of the Arabian Peninsula of leftist viewpoints. The works do not represent one common political viewpoint rather they showcase the conflicting strains of leftist realpolitik of the 1970s. The collection includes classical works by Lenin such as an Arabic translation of his Letter to American workers. These books contrast well with for example decidedly anti-Soviet works such as Down with the new tsars! Soviet revisionists' anti-China atrocities on the Heilung and Wusuli Rivers. This pamphlet deals with the conflict between Soviet and Chinese border guards on Zhenbao Island that emerged around 1969 as part of the Sino-Soviet border conflict. Photos in this work show troops arguing Chinese fishermen fighting with Soviet guards and piles of Soviet military gear left abandoned in the snow after their retreat. Some of the works in this collection are probably published by Arabic immigrant groups in the US. The Arabic edition of the Declaration of the Revolutionary Internationalist Movement was published by the Revolutionary Internationalist Movement RIM that emerged in France and consisted of 17 diverse Maoist groups from around the globe. Its objective was to work towards establishing a new kind of "Communist International" organisation rooted in the Marxism-Leninism-Maoism political philosophy. The Revolutionary Communist Party USA was the American affiliate of this group. Marxist-Leninist bookstores in the Detroit area often stocked Arabic editions of classic communist texts like Lenins Two tactics of social democracy in the Democratic Revolution due to the large local population of Middle Eastern immigrants. This collection contains a rare Arabic edition of the text in published in Moscow by Progress Publishers in 1978. This book as well as others in this collection are rubberstamped May Day Books & Periodicals Detroit on their rear cover. Among the collection are other classics of communist and socialist literature such as Friedrich Engels Anti-Dühring in which he laid out his vision of socialism.A slight outlier in this collection is Stanley Lane-Pooles Coins of the Amawi Khalifehs with the text in English and Arabic and illustrated with black-and-white photographic plates. This reprint of the 1874 edition is still very useful for collectors learning to read the Kufic inscriptions on the coins of the Umayyad period as it contains transcriptions of coin legends in Arabic. With some blind- and/or ink-stamped information on the wrappers and/or flyleaves of several volumes. Some volumes are slightly browned and foxed and show some occasional minor tears not affecting the text. Overall the collection is in good condition. [various publishers], hardcover

21433Hardcover. Very good. Black leather album containing 54 tissue-guarded leaves of watercolor paper of which 43 have been used. 10 x 12 inches stamped in gilt on the front "Sketches on the Nile / Alan Hinch / 1938." Leather scuffed cloth tape reinforcement to inner hinges all else very good. Alan Hinch was born in England c. 1881 but was living in the United States by 1920 when the federal census documents him working in Miami as pilot of a private yacht owned by socialite James Deering an executive in International Harvester Company. He apparently embarked on this Nile cruise as companion to his next employer Richard Flint Howe 1863-1943 another International Harvester executive who had married James Deering's sister Abby. Passenger manifests show Hinch as traveling in the company of a "Mr. R. Howe" and the census of 1940 lists him as butler on Howe's estate. He was clearly more than a simple servant however as this charming and humorous album reveals. The album documents the journey from departure on the Italian Line passenger ship Conte de Savoia on January 15 1938 to arrival home at Banksia Howe's custom-built mansion in Aiken South Carolina on March 26 1938. Each page includes an original watercolor most measuring about 4.5 x 8 inches but some larger with a related original doggerel poem. Hinch's paintings are skillful. His poetry is markedly less so but it is clever observant and skillfully captures the traveler's experiences. On a visit to Asyut Hinch writes: Assuit the place they said would be warm/ Was 42 degrees at early morn/ If the like keeps on we will have to don /Earlaps coonskins as at a football game./ Rode through the quarters where the natives were/ Couldn't say lived for it looked so bare/ They called out for bakscheesh/ Both old and young/ They thought we came only to give to them./ Oh what a place to be born and live./ Then through the bazaar narrow and crowded/ Maybe bargains galore/ But we passed through as quick as we could./ Oddments and rubbish in hovels so poor./ Then to the tombs too high to climb/ And round the modern town we drove/ Back on board the "Memnon" to dine. A visit to the ancient cemetery at Beni Hasan is described from the perspective of the donkeys who labor under the weight of well-fed tourists. Other subjects include the ocean liners and streamers they traveled in local people they encountered a dragoman a water carrier a little girl in a red scarf boats on the Nile camels and water buffalo the Pyramids Sphinx Panopolis El-Balyyana Abydos Karnak Kom Ombo Wadi Haifa Abu Simbel and Luxor. There are also several views of the Mediterranean coast and one of Banksia in South Carolina. In all a charming and lovely representation of the places and time. hardcover books

1936008594London: Jonathan Cape Ltd. 1936. First edition first printing. Hardcover. This compellingly well-preserved jacketed first edition first printing was signed by Frost in Texas in 1937. Frost wrote in two lines on the front free endpaper recto: Robert Frost San Antonio 1937. This copy was signed thus within four months of publication 13 November 1936; Frost spent the winter of 1936-37 in San Antonio from December 1936 until late March 1937 taking up residence at a home close to Trinity University.

Condition is near fine in a near fine dust jacket. The blue cloth binding is square clean bright and tight with sharp corners and only mild shelf wear to the bottom edges. The contents are clean with no spotting no soiling and only mild age toning. The blue-stained top edges retain even color the fore and untrimmed bottom edges are clean. Texas provenance for this British-only edition is both a bit ironic and entirely complete; the sole previous ownership mark other than the authors signature is a small booksellers sticker affixed to the lower left rear pastedown: FRANK ROSENGREN BOOKSELLER MILAM BLDG. San Antonio Texas in operation from 1935 to 1987. Willie Morris editor of Harper's called Rosengren's Books "one of the finest and most admirable bookstores in America."

The white dust jacket printed in red and black is unclipped retaining the original lower front flap 5s. net price and entirely complete with no loss or tears. While the jacket shows light overall soiling we note no appreciable color shift between the covers and spine and only trivial hints of shelf wear to extremities. The dust jacket is protected beneath a clear removable archival cover.

Selected Poems had first been published in 1923 with poems from Frosts first three published collections A Boys Will North of Boston and Mountain Interval. The collection was carefully calculated to present Frost as a major contemporary figure. Frosts arrival as a major contemporary figure had been imminent; that first Selected Poems was published in March 1923 preceding the November 1923 publication of New Hampshire the collection that won Frost his first Pulitzer Prize. By 1936 when this expanded Selected Poems was published by Jonathan Cape in London Frost unequivocally was a major contemporary figure. The arrangement of poems 62 rather than the 1923 editions 43 poems was not only a new and expanded arrangement but also the first book of Frosts to contain material by others with introductory essays by W. H. Auden C. Day Lewis Paul Engle and Edwin Muir.

This expanded edition of Selected Poems was published first and only in England where Frosts first book A Boys Will had been published in 1913 23 years before. It had been in England that this quintessential American poet had been first published and recognized. Now preeminent in America Frost was being reintroduced to England. As explained by the publishers note on the dust jacket flap: Mr. Robert Frost is by now recognized as the outstanding poet of his generation in America and to the few but still too few in England his work has long been known as unique in its kind it is a striking tribute to the appeal of his poetry that Mr. W. H. Auden Mr. Cecil Day Lewis Mr. Paul Engle and Mr. Edwin Muir should have contributed for this volume four specially written essays of critical appreciation uniting in their admiration of an artist older in years but unageing in his sensibility and performance.

Frost required little introduction for the rest of his life. The next year 1937 he won the third of his eventual and still-unequaled four Pulitzer Prizes for Poetry. He spent his final years as the most highly esteemed American poet of the twentieth century with an ever-growing hoard of academic and civic honors. Two years before his death he became the first poet to read in the program of a U.S. Presidential inauguration Kennedy January 1961.

References: Crane A5 & A22; Parini Robert Frost: A Life; San Antonio Current

Jonathan Cape Ltd. hardcover
