The last two essays were written with Joseph Warren Beach. The end of the 19th century was felt to be a period of degeneration, but also the simultaneous closing and onset of a new era, full of hope for a new beginning. The hallmarks of the fin de siecle that were recognized as prominent in the 1880s and 1890s, included boredom, cynicism, pessimism, and a widespread belief that civilization leads to decadence.
